OK, i have a '91 Hatch STD and its completly stock. I drive it kinda hard but nothing serious. So today i was driving to class and with all of my shifts, after I reached a certain point, i would here this grinding sound. Will my car still be safe to drive? or will it explode? Cuz i had a friend with an Integra who had a planetary explode in his transmission. He was lucky it happened outside his house. I just dont want something that happening to my car and have to get it towed. But on the plus side, its more motavation to get a swap done to my car, i just dont want my car to die before it happens! What you guys think?
Have you checked to see how much oil is in your transmission? Your synchros are probably getting a little worn. Also, does the transmission make any other noises, like a humming noise when in gear?
<<<< mine too. Another std brotha over here. Only if i shift it as hard as I can though. I did put synchromesh in and it got better, but lately ive been grinding a lil bit. I'm gonna have to put some more in.
btw, would it be possible that it could boil away? Cause I can't think of another reason why im grinding.

i havent checked the tranny oil in awhile. There is no humming but the grinding is starting to get a little more frequent. Im not to worried cuz in in the process of buying a b16a so i wont have the engine or tranny for to much longer but should i change it anyway just in case?
Couldn't hurt to change the tranny oil, or to try some SyncroMesh in it. It won't magically repair any damage, but it can give a bad tranny a little more lease on life.
A couple questions I've got to ask, though: How hard are you running the car? How are you shifting? If you're just yanking the lever straight back from 1-2 or 3-4, or jamming it forward on the 2-3 shift, you're not doing the gearbox any favors. Synchros help get things rev-matched and "in synch" inside the gearbox, but they don't work instantly; they like a little pause to catch up. I try to shift (95% of the time, at least) by putting the lever into neutral while shifting, for about long enough to take my hand off the shift **** and put it back on. Just a slight pause. It might not be strictly NECESSARY, but it can't hurt the transmission to give it a break.
Dragracers slam the gears home on every shift (because even thousandths of a second matter), but they also have pit crews and sponsor money that enable them to rebuild the transmission every few runs if necessary. Most of us don't have that luxury, so we have to treat our gearboxes a little more gently to make them last.

i may be some punk kid, i will admit that I am but i generally treat my car well. I usually do that pause between shifts, i put it into neutral when stopped. I try to take good care of my car. I just think that it could the tranny oil, cuz to be honest, im not sure wehn it was last changed. I thought I had it changed before I got home from my break so I could take it down south but I could be wrong. I try not to put any stress the car.

That could be it to. I just dont want anything serious to happen to my car before I do this swap. This car is my daily beater. Im just trying to revive her and make her last as long as possible. I will kill the car before I get a new one.
Mainly because Im poor but also because its the best car I have ever driven. And it is also almost impossible to find a car that just keeps on giving, even after so many years. So yea, the tranny might just be getting old but Ill try and keep it in as good condition as I can.
