D16 VTEC questions...
Ok I just got a VTEC head from the junk-yard. I was wondering hoe to tell if its a y8 or a z6. The car it was off of had a mini me swap. Now when I go to put it on my motor what head gasket should I use? And what kind of timming belt should I use? If I look at the ucew do I kno if it is the vtec one? And lastly I heared if i cant get the head I can just buy a vtec controller and it will work...Is that true..
Thanks for all the help...

That was a lot of questions, but here goes. To tell if its a Z6 or Y8, where the timing belt cover is, near the cam gear, it should same some numbers like P28 or P08, that is a z6 head, im not sure what it will say with a Y8. As far as head gasket, i'm not sure about that, but I would use what matches to block, IM NOT SURE. Timing belt, whatever head you have Z6 or Y8, you should have a Z6 or Y8 timing belt... belt matches head. No clue what a ucew is, but i'm guessing ecu. On the ecu there is a line of code, in the middle should be 3 digits, for OBD-1 go with P28, fo OBD-0 go with PM6.

Whoever you heard that from is not bright. Why would you have to buy a vtec head to have vtec? you CANNOT use a non-vtec head (i.e. D16A6 head) and hook up a vtec controller to it and expect to have vtec. it will NOT work.
Lastly, the search works wonders.

Also on the y8 head,if you can't find the markings for some reason, the combustion chambers are flat on two sides and round on the other two.The z6 is round on all sides.(unless im greatly mistaken, just politely call me an idiot

what engine are you bolting it to? i'm planning a mini me as well. if you have a y8 head, and an a6 right now, the distributor will bolt up fine, if you have a z6 head, you will have to creatively find a way to bolt the dist. to the head. if you are not doing an obd1 conversion, you can just hook up a vafc or other rpm activated switch on say a pm6, or pg7 and vtec will work, but, it will not be the same performance you'd get from a obd1 conv. vtec advances timing, and a vafc is not capable of doing that.

Yes, that will work, here is how to hook up an Apexi VAFC to ur PM6 ecu if you are going to use it. http://www.geocities.com/bing_....html I used this site and I love my VAFC.
