Can the stock spring be decompress whil its still attached to the car?
Perhaps you could use a jack to push the suspension up while its on jack stands and then install spring compressors while its still on the vehicle. But there is no advantage and you may not get the spring/shock out since its a tight fit without the compressor. Also it seems kinda dangerous to me. Sounds like you are trying to figure out a way to avoid spring compressors. No way.

What are you trying to do?
Just buy a spring compressor from autozone... $20

How do you figure that? If you removed the nuts that hold the shock to the upper hat, then raised the car w/ your jack, it will definently decompress the spring all the way. Now weather or not that is safe, well, I wouldn't try it.
Oh yeah, how the hell would you get the spring back in there after you did that? Just rent the spring comrpessor. It's free!!!

I have tryed doing it while on the car...I guess I was being dumb and I was trying to rush. Big mistake!! When the spring decompresses it make it virtually impossible to get the shock and spring off the car. I spent a lot of time tying to get the shock back together so I could get it off the car. It was not fun!

exactly. yes you can do it like 94eg said. but with stock springs, theyre so long and preloaded that even when you loosen the top nut, theres not enough travel allowed to remove the shock from the fork. its possible, but not easy, not safe (im not talking death, but i came close to damaging my fingers).
when you are dealing with aftermarket lowering springs or adjustable springs, the length of the springs isnt an issue and it makes working wit hthe suspension really easy. but when taking off stock springs, use a spring compressor and remove it off the car.

No iam saying you will deassemble the things you will need to deassemble to get to the spring but ..you just undo the bolts and jack the car up to decompress the spring ..
you must be misunderstanding.

thats what im saying, just try it your self then if you dont understand. it will be a bitch to disassemble if you are taking out stock springs.

use the following method ONLY if you are swapping out stock springs for lowering springs. i am not held responsible for anything you do. that being said, here's the ghetto method that works if you're safe about it and follow all the steps.
1.) Remove the lower control arm.
2.) Remove the strut fork.
3.) Remove the axle.
4.) Keep your body away from the side of the car you are working on, and remove the top nut under the hood that holds the shock and spring together. You should hear a loud noise, which of course is the shock and spring hitting the ground. VOILA! They're now apart, and you're not dead.
To reinstall with lowering springs, reassemble the strut assembly with the fork, rebolt the lower arm to the frame, and the strut to the lower arm. Jack up ther lower arm until the top of the strut rod pops through the strut mount under the hood, and reattach the nut securely. Take the lower arm back off, and reinstall the axle. Reinstall the lower arm, and you're done.

You can always be lazy and remove the spring by laying the entire assembly on the ground and loosening the nut past the last couple threads via a breaker bar that puts you far away from the strut and a cardboard box to catch the pieces in. The spring will rocket that **** off like a bomb, but you will have saved yourself a trip to autozone

I won't lie. I've done it before

Thats alot more work than just using a ffing spring compressor.....
