i believe that cheaptrubo charges about 250 for your basic rebuild, that doesnt include balancing (i think) which is generally another 65 bucks

How old is the turbo? Have you contacted Precision at all? Reason I ask is because I had to have my turbo rebuilt and Precision ended up warrantying it for me. It's worth a shot.

hmm....see if the person you are buying it from has a receipt or knows whom they bought it from and when. Also ask them if they sent in the warranty card to Precision and if they did send in the warranty card then they should have his information on file and you should be able to call them and find out when it was purchased. Precision has a One Year or 10,000 mile warranty on their turbos, but something that needs to be taken into consideration is why there was shaft play. If there was some type of contamination (such as he ran the turbo without a filter and got a bunch of garbage in there which trashed it, etc) then they may not warranty it, but you won't know that until they get it and look at it. Just something that would be worth a shot before paying to have it rebuilt.

It shouldn't be a big deal even if it was ran without a filter, but just something I know I have heard as far as a reason for them not warrantying it. Here is some contact info for them:

We typically ask to see the turbo first so we can dis-assemble and inspect it. Then we have a person call you with a total. This way, we can give you a firm estimate on your specific situation. This also gives you an opportunity to discuss any upgrades if you want to pursue them at that time. Each of our turbos carries a 12 month, 12,000 mile limited warranty from date of invoice. Turbos that we repair carry the same warranty. Hope this helps.
