just about a month ago i got my exhaust system installed which consisted of the 2.25 mandrel kit from kteller, along with resonator, dynomax muffler, and two 90 degree mandrel elbow bends as the two tailpipes.
all components were in mild steel, and i originally wanted to go with stainless but people kept telling me it was'nt necessary if i lived in Texas, since the weather is'nt like the north here.
but i just saw rust spots forming the other day and i don't understand why in only one month? this can't be right? i did'nt spray paint the welds or the components which i was meaning to, and i was going to soon, but damn i did'nt know i had to "rush" and paint it right away, cause thats a little fast for rust to form for a new system is'nt it? i mean i was going to paint it later with antirust paint, but i was thinkiing i would put naval jelly and get rid of any rust and then paint it.
there was'nt rust on the dynomax muffler, only on the 90 degree tailpipes, but they are all mild anyway.
all there was in this last month here in dallas was 1-2 days of sleet and a little snow, could that of caused the rust that fast? any tips? thanks

It isn't the snow and sleet that causes rust it is the combination of the moisture and the salt they use to remove snow from the roads. My guess is that it is surface rust.

i bought the pipes from kteller, and out of the two options, i chose "mild", i got the muffler another place, but that is'nt showing rust
i am sure its probably on the surface, but i just did'nt expect it thats all, but yeah i will get it off with naval jelly and a scrub brush and then just paint it, i guess i'll just paint with some kind of anti-rust flat gray color high temp or something?
i just think this is so funny since all i was doing was trying to find a good replacement for the old stromung cat-back i had (which lasted from 98-til 2004!!)
and i looked for aftermarket ones that looked decent and none had a stock look, all had a big 4" melonshooter and ****, so i decided to go the "custom piece together" look and out of all the people i talked to on here, none said they rust that fast, lol.
i was the one who was saying i wanted to get stainless so i can have a good system that would last a couple years, but now i know....................but i hope when i paint it that it would protect it good enough to last a couple years thats all.

I have mild steel on my car, not sure if its coated with anything or not but I've had it for about 4 years and yes its rusting in spots but it took years for it to rust. It all depends on the metal. You could buy a sheet of metal and leave it sit in your garage ( where no rain or snow will get onto it ) but it will still rust in days. Its only surface rust though, get a wire wheel brush and take it off and just coat it with high temp paint or any other kind of paint, I use rust-oleum.
i have some surface rust on the muffler of my apexi world sport. short of painting the muffler black, wat can i do to remove the rust and then protect the muffler while keeping the polished look?

Use a brillo pad and rub it very gently..It'll come right off..
That muffler shouldnt have rusted to begin with,,Its supposed to be stainless ..

this may sound dumb but, do i wet the brillo bad like im gonna wash a grill or just use it dry (im assuming wet since a dry one would scratch the steel like crazy). thanks ill try that later today. yeah i kno it's not supposed to rust.. hopefully it's just a little surface rust and nothing more.
