Default Dash lights out.....update!

A few weeks ago I posted a problem that I had with my dash lights on my 98 Lude. I had a aftermarket keyless entry that is now OUT OF THE CAR. I just took it out about an hour ago. Everyone told me to start there to see if it was the cause of the problem. Well its not I guess. SOOOOOO, what else do you guys thinl it is? Maybe a dimmer switch? As it stands the gauge pod, hvac panel cruise, sunroof, and window switches are all not illuminated. The only thing that lights up is the radio. I have nothing aftermarket in the car. Any help would be good. Also what oil are you guys using in your ludes? I just had to put two quarts in cause the oil light was flashing today. WTF! I know you burn oil in vtec but damm! I think Ill start using synthetic. Would that help? The car has 105k on it. Thanks guys.

Check the park light fuse . When your aftermarket keyless was installed they might have blown the fuse while installing , or check the white wire that is comming out of the keyless unit make sure it is hooked up right.
As for the oil synthetic will not help , have a leak down test performed on your engine to determine what the condition of the engine is. Since you have over 100k on it you should also be looking at a timing belt as well. good Luck

I'll check that fuse, the keyless is out of the car now and it still doesnt work. Its been an on going thing with the car. They were on all summer and even in the winter until we had a day were it was like 2 degrees out and then they went off.
I'll check the fuses and relays again. I had someone look at it a long time ago, when I first got the car, and he said it might be something called a multiplex control switch. What the hell is that?

yea, check the corresponding fuses. Willing to bet you popped one. If not you may have lost the relay but HIGHLY doubtful.

But they go on and off at any time. If a fuse was blown they just wouldnt come on.

I have the same problem, my dash lights and climate control lights are out and the fuses check out good. The only things i can think of is that there are a blown series of bulbs or there is a bad relay...any suggestions??

You might have a bad Dimmer Control Unit. That is located directly behind the clock. Take out that smoked plastic and there's a little black box bolted onto a white tray. Try this... unscrew that black box, and smell it. Does it smell burnt? If so, replace. If not, either open it up & check the circuitry for small burnt out parts, or check for loose wire connectors around your dash and on that dimmer control unit. I fried mine a couple months back. PITA... drove without dash lights for like a week, didn't have time at all to fix that week... drove me nuts.

Ah hi my name's Cam, long time listner first time caller
------------------------------------------------------------------
So now that we have got the plesantries out of the way here's my question.
Akhany are you refering to the 4th gen or the 5th gen with the dimmer controler unit thing, because i've had a problem with 4th gen whereby as soon as i turn on my lights the dash dims for a fraction of a second then then brightens up again blowing a fuse in the prosses.
kind of on topic i think.
Also when this fuse goes it stops the fule/temp lights from dimming but compleatly kills speedo/rev lights, the headlights still go but the back lights go out. could this be only one fuse or do u think im missing another blown fuse?

thanks in advance+be gentil im new to this.

You definetley have a short circuit somewhere.

Does this happen everytime you plug in a new fuse? Or has this only happened once? The way you describe it sounds as if this has happened more than once.

Hay thanks for your reply. i actaly fixed it a copple of hours ago, i did some serious surching, not that i hadn't surched befor, and came across an arcived thred with someone saying that they sourced their problem back to a bad stereo install, shorting stereo dimmer wire. i didn't think this was the likely problem with my car, even though my friend and i just did a dodgy instal a few weeks back. any way i looked in to anyway it and that was indeed the problem so it showes what i know
so in answer to your question it did keep blowing fuses, i blew 4 befor i decided replaceing fueses just wasn't going fix the problem lol.
Thanks again.

Youve got more issues with your car than just ur dash lights if youre letting your oil level drop enough to get the light. Careful with that.
