just what the title states... my transmission's about to die, it's shaking and humming like crazy. i'm faced with replacing it, and i want to get a good idea of how much i'll end up spending to get this fixed.

also, does anyone know of good shops around the SF valley area from personal experience or through your friends? i got my car diagnosed today, and has given me a tentative quote of $2200 for a rebuilt transmission... total rapeage!

any help is appreciated.

 

I take it you have a manual trans?

I can get you a rebuilt Gear Speed tranny for $1350. You'd just have to take out your old one and install the new one.

Add $200 and you get carbon coated synchro's and custom colored/polished case with chrome brakets!

have you been happy with your Gear Speed tranny so far? do the carbon synchros do anything for gear changes, or is that just for more strength?

do they do installs as well? i've never done a tranny install/removal, and i wanna replace the clutch and flywheel while i'm in there.

 

Yeah, my gear speed tranny has been great. I had a Kaaz LSD before I had it rebuilt, so I bought a Type 1 and had them install my LSD.

The carbon synchros work great, never have grinded a gear yet. Those synchros go in gears 3/4/5.

The stock rebuild and Type 1 tranny's come with a two year warranty!

I know some mechanics that can do the tranny swap as well.

 

just went thru the gear speed site. it looks like they do some top quality work! if i do go w/ them i'd probably go w/ the Type 1 for the extra 200. but damn, i'm looking at around $2k, even more, for this transmission replacement!

in the meantime, i'm still open to more affordable solutions... anyone have a mint tranny that happened to come off of a B16, and also happened to have an LSD, and by some chance have a clutch and flywheel laying around, and all this stuff is just taking up space and need someone to take it all for cheap?? that's not asking for too much right...?

 

anyone know of a good shop to get tranny work done? someone who knows what they're doing, but doesn't believe in overcharging people.

usually when a transmission goes out its cheaper to buy a new one then to rebuild, keep that in mind.

 

true... after finding out how much rebuilt ones go for, i figured i might as well go for a type r tranny if i'm gonna pay that much.
