96 ex Power Window Runner Track?
so I got a 1996 honda civic EX...
It has power window as most ex's do...
I put the window down and then as it came up the window started to get caught and tilt forward pulling the rear of the window away from the door frame, but it would then come up on the outside of the weather stripping. I resolved this a while ago temporarily and got my window up. But today I ,without thinking, rolled the window down again to pay mister gas attendent and you guessed it.. it's stuck..
So i called honda and they say it will cost around $200 for the repair (to replace the window runner track), mostly all labor. So I'm wondering if this is something that I can bang out with a friend. I imagine the actual part (rubber runner track) is cheap, I took my door panel off and the whole system/mechanism seems to work properly and I could feel a tear in the runner track but it was up behind the interior metal framing of the door, so It was really difficult to get any concrete info. But I don't have any clue how it all works or how to remove the track, adhesive, etc.etc.
Anyone know anyhting about this?

the window mechanism/system is pretty simple in the civic. it is definitely something you could take care of in an afternoon. is it the front runner or the rear runner? worst case scenario you might have to remove the glass, but even that isnt too difficult.
it's the front runner.
the glass is completely out of the rubber runner, the rubber runner is on the inside part of the metal track. I imagine i need to remove the glass, but should i try and slide the rubber runner out first? is there adhesive or is it just press fit? felt like press fit but my car is old and the adhesive may be bad in spots?

no glue at all..just press fit..u just gotta tilt the glass in, which is a pain the ***, and bolt back on, run the glass up to the top, then retighten..should fix that..make sure the rubber is siting right..sucker likes to slide out of place

thats the bottom of the window...
thats the top of the window where the rubber runner is pulled from the sides of the metal track it looks like it's a "c" channel press fit around the edges of the metal track and the rubber has pulled it's self off of that.
Pulling the window towards me won't help at this stage. When I had previously fixxed it I rammed a cd bewteen the window glass and rubber runner, but now it's completly off?
I'm hesitant to fix it now in that if I need a new rubber runner I won't have a replacement? it looks like putting the runner is would be a pain?
well its should be easy..
run window far enough down to be able to reach, i believe two bolts that hold the glass to the arms. Lift glass out with a tilt and slant. and remove that plastic molding at the end of the door..like three screws from the inside part of the door.
Then pull out the old, trashed rubber out and well trash, but before u do pull out, look at how its installed..the outside and inside part of the door and take note.
With ur new one, from the junk yard or from honda (80-100 bucks)
start pressing in the new one from top to bottom.its gonna be a tad hard to reach the inner ones, i say use sumin flat, that would fit where the glass slides through and press it in completely.. use where u need it.
Make sure the corners are in nicely or u'll end up with the same prob down the line, so more like run the rubber when in up as much as u can to get it in there.
drop that window in, its gonna be hard, i say the largest corner goes in first then tilt the other one in ( i think at honda they mostly charge for this pain in the *** step
,gotta make sure while putting it in, u dont undo the rubber install.., then hook the window up to the arm and tighten the glass abit..run the glass up to the top and to adjust loosen the bolts to the glass and push up a tad along with the arm and tighten..
Grab some silicon spray and slap that bitch on ur runners for faster operation of the glass and tad-da..u should have ur window back
one hour tops

EvilPinkEye thanks man..

I'll probably get a new rubber runner from honda to be safe, but it actually doesn't sound too hard at all... The glass re-install is my only concern, i imagine that it would be a bitch...might have to wait for a buddy to come over for that part? only one way to find out
a friend (FWejCOUPE) mentioned this:
i honestly don't think its just the track, it might have been the first time but looking at how everything is bent in there i'm guessing that the window regulator is probably bent too.
1 hour though
I take my time when I do something the first time, I don't want to screw other **** up, and I want to beable to know how to put my car back together.
ohh and i'm not that mechanically inclined

Same thing happened to me, can't really explain how to fix it besides just play around with it(carfully, dont wanna break the glass) and position back into the rubber. Took me like an hour to fix my drivers side window. Also while youre at it, might wanna get some silcon spray or grease and put it in the rubber lining, helps the seal and the window comes up much faster. I also put lithium grease in the bottm track where the little rollers go.
ps. i have 98 EX, but the window mechanism should be about the same, i think.

Well well well....same thing happened to my civic. Here's the real deal folks. I have a 97 civic ex. Same thing happened to me. So this is the process i went through. I did some research on my civic. Apparently there is a bulletin out on my make and model. A bulletin is kinda like a note from the dealerships saying that my make and model "have been known" to fail on it's window regulators. The whole cost was about 270 dollars to fix. Well after a long bullshit process, i had no option but to replace it. It's such a pain in the *** to fit the window back on track and all that. Plus, if you keep messing around with the window, and trying to put it back in it's place, u'll ruin your window runners. Even though they are cheap, labor isn't. So i spent about 270 to replace the window regulator, window runners and rails. So do some research on the web about your make and model. THere are bound to be webs or forums on ur make and model. Good luck. Hope my story helped you in the end...
yo, same thing happened to my driver side window. i ended up needing a new regulator and motor for it. cost around 300 dollars. it really sucked. i went to the goodyear dealer and it took them about a week to get the part from honda, a day to fix it and they put my window up as far as they could so rain wouldn't leak in. of course, it was a rainy week and i had to put a plastic bag there to keep my car from getting wet while i was in school. it sucked. first 2 days i had tpo leave my car outside with the drivers window 3/4 of the way down. i was scared it would get stolen. but i was lucky enough people in west chester aren't that bad about stealing cars...
goog luck with your window though.

Back in 2002 when I did mine, the window regulator sans motor was $30-40 depending on the dealer. You might as well buy both sides.
As mentioned this is a TSB and they will have them in stock.
The Helms Manual provides extraction/install procedures. If you plan on keeping your car for more than a year or so, I would say it would be more than wise to buy a set of manuals. It takes about 45 minutes a side.

This is really inspiring me to go spray that silicon grease into my window tracks after I bought it at Autozone.
Good luck getting it all replaced, working in tight spaces, especially inside door panels sucks.
