There is not a grommet there. Start looking on your fire wall on the same side that your battery is located and locate a spot on both sides of the fire wall that you think is clear of anything and using what they call a unibit(or you can use a drill bit) drill a hole and pop in a snap in grommet(they come with most amp kits) into the fire wall and there you go.

ummm, yeah - there is - That's where the main wiring harness passes through the ******* firewall.
and if you don't trust me, here's a photo of it....

That's a 0/1 ga wire going through the factory gromment - but then again, what do I know about civics...

thanks everyone it was a grueling 4 hours but I finally got the system installed. Its amazing that even my shitty rockford punch 10s and there measly amp sound so good. I came to a lot of realizations while doing this install though. I finally figured out why so many people here in ohio have domestic cars. Its bc ohio has a lot of white trash mechanics that love a car that requires nothing really to fall into peices. My friend and i often found ourselves cussing at the amazing crafstmanship of the Civic. Even though it was a pain in the *** half the time Hondas are well put together cars!!
thanks everyone

That you THINK is clear of anything - yeah, that's REAL professional....THINK, you had better CHECK and VERIFY there is nothing there before you and your unibit start breaking ****.

Man I am not sure what your deal is but do you work in a shop. Do you do this everyday? I was just wondering because I do. Are you mecp certified? Because I am. Have you ever done professional installing in a shop. I try to get on here to give a little advice that is the RIGHT way and the PROFESSIONAL way but its people like you that think they know it all and they think that they have done everything in the world right and think that they hold the answers to the world that give these websites a bad name. What's your email name so I can show you the extensive work that I have done. I have no problem with that and showing you what I do right and what you might learn from if you will shut your mouth and listen.

Work in a shop - no way, I have a different carreer path - Plus, audio is my hobby - often times you get burnt out on it if it is also you job. Second, I hate to compromise on a system. I'd off myself before I would spend all day in dirty cars doing headunits and 4 speakers - I like to do high end systems that are great at one thing - SQ. I've done contract work for people before also if we are going to start airing our resumes....
And, really, I fail to see what that has to do with the fact that there is a grommet underneath the battery tray of a 96-00 Civic?!!?

No, I'm not MECP certified, and I'm not impressed by it - why you ask? Because it it means nothing as to the quality of your work. Someone who is certified is not guarenteed to do a good job, someone without certification doesn't automatically make them a hack.
And just because you get paid to do something, it doesn't make you a "professional" Often "professional" installers are under the gun to pump out as many installs as possible - meaning quality isn't always the key concern - not sure if it's that way at your place of business, but at most installation places, speed is first, and make sure it's good enough so that the customer won't bitch. Yes, your way is probably faster if you know where to drill and you have the tools.
Hell, I'm a mechanical engineer, are you? Who gives a rat's ***?!?!!
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I try to get on here to give a little advice that is the RIGHT way and the PROFESSIONAL way but its people like you that think they know it all and they think that they have done everything in the world right and think that they hold the answers to the world that give these websites a bad name.</TD></TR></TABLE>
You are entitled to your opinion of what is the right way. But please, I fail to see what is "right" about drilling an extra hole in the firewall when if you take a few extra minutes you can use what the factory provided. One way, you can go back to stock and no-one is the wiser - the other way, you have made a permanent modification to the car. Telling people to drill into a firewall when they don't have a lot of experience with this kind of work is very, very dangerous - they are very likely to drill into something. Many won't go and get a grommet or don't have the right tools to do it....so like I said the fool proof way, and the cleanest way is to use the factory grommet.....plus it dumps the wire right above the kick panel so you can run it straight to the back of the car......
And what is ghetto about my way - you NEVER see it. I used some silicone and electrical tape to ensure that there was a water tight seal into the cabin.
I never said that I knew all - you were the one who said that there wasn't a grommet under the battery tray - now, who is really acting like the know-it-all??
Pretty interesting when you put it that way isn't it.........
I think if you took a general survey of the people on this board and asked them how much I have helped on this board, you would actually figure out that I'm one of the people who tries to enhance everyone's experience on this board by not only posting helpful tips, my fabrication techniques, but also giving solid advice. I can't say that for you so far.
I've been learning about this field/hobby since day one, but so far I've learned nothing from you, except for how to storm onto a board, tell someone their wrong, then get butthurt when you are corrected.

Why send it to my email - post it up for everyone to see. I'm sure you are competent and have done some nice work, why not share it with everyone to contribute to the board (like I do) rather then send it to just me. Lord knows you know something about installing, help all you want - but actually help, and be accurate about it.
I'm sorry, but if tell me I'm wrong - when I'm not, you are not going to get a pleasant reply for me. And ask everyone around here, when I've been wrong, I've been a man and admitted it.....let's see how you react.
What's a real shame is that we would probably agree on a lot if you didn't just storm in here tell me I'm wrong (when CLEARLY I'm not)....next time you are the new kid on the block, it would behoove you tread a bit more lightly for a while.
Oh, and if you want to see more of my "ghetto" work - fine http://www.sounddomain.com/id/sq_e46_m3

puffsef, MECP means nothing.
I know people who design subwoofers and amplifiers, yet they give a rat-*** about MECP. Why? Because it doesn't really mean anything. Anyone who orders the MECP book and memorizes it can do well on the test. Even my pet monkey is able to comprehend that book and pass with confidence.
"professional" is given a name by the shop so the customer will believe and have faith in their work.
ATF_kuk here works in a shop and he will tell you otherwise about drilling a hole into your firewall. When there is an available grommet to use, why not use it instead of creating a new hole? Personally, I like organization.
In my car, I had to drill a hole to run my wire. why? because there is no available grommet that fits my wire though. Drilling a hole is your last resort if you cannot get it through the grommet.
You don't need to work in a shop to know how to install or work on a system.
secondly, i don't think you want to argue with rcurley. He has the ***** to fabricate things that most people would not even attempt. If you're going to send pictures, please take one with a penny shot at least we know it's somewhat authentic.
now if ya'll excuse me, i'm gonna go drill another hole in my firewall to run a 16 gauge power wire. 16 gauge is awefully too professional not be have its own hole drilled.

I also don't like to drill holes.
Being an engineer I can understand why an MECP book (if it does) recommends it.
They don't want there techs screwing with the factory wiring. So if something goes wrong the damage is going to be minimal. They weigh the risks vs the benifits. And drilling holes is obviously much less time consuming. In a hurry up and finish environment its probably safer then trying to stuff more wires through a stock gromet.
I see plus and minus to both sides of this argument. I think the professional should stick to stuffing wiring through the stock harness. Ametuers should probably drill holes. As long as they also use a gromet around the wire. I love the some of the gromets they sell for car audio. Most of them make me laugh. The parts look like they should be in a plumbers tool box.
I think drilling holes looks ghetto.
