Default Grinding Sound from Transmission.

Tranny: 95 GSR
When the car is in neutral, it makes this weird sound like the tranny is grinding on some thing. But stops when I engage the clutch. But makes the sound agian when in gear. At first I thought it was the throw out bearing so I replaced that, but it's still doing it. I have no idea what it is now.
Note: It sounds like 2 peices of moving metal touching each other.

Sounds like input shaft or bearing.

Agreed the bearing is 91004-P21-003 and costs around 43.84

it is usually number 17 or the one that is on the case

It could also be the bearing in the flywheel part number 91006-634-008 and sells for about 18.00

I'm almost certian it's the input bearing after doing some research. But after reading how it's a pain to replace, I'm hoping it's something else.

input shaft bearing, same thing happened to my y1. i had to take off the casing and press out the old race which was separated from the inner pieces. pain in the *** to say the least. i had to use a bearing puller from autozone. hope all goes well.

If you have never done one before I suggest you get someone who has to do it. trust me I have seen friends try to do these and they have had nothing but a PITA of an experience. These are guys who are somewhat mechanically inclined. Trust me get it done by an experienced mech.

I commend you though if you attempt to do it. I also wish you luck (no sarcasm intended)

Transmission can be very intimidating first time you do it
Its easy once you do one

Definitely an input shaft bearing. My old b16 s1 tranny had this same problem.. I got rid of it (cheap) and bought a j1 to replace it. No more problems.

Good luck.
