D16Z6 into 93 DX - problems, can't figure it out...
D16Z6 coming out of a CRX - ran fine and STRONG. Going into 93 Civic DX (D15B7). Changed to OBD1 injectors, put on an AEM cam gear (mistake I think...), and rewired the distributor. I'm using the D15B7 computer since I don't have VTEC hooked up yet. No CELs.
The motor will start but it will run very rough, and won't get up past 1500rpm. Sometimes it won't even start. Every now and then I hear a spark knock, but if I change the timing, then it dies or won't start up again. Timing is hard for me on this motor because the timing piece that goes behind the cam gear is missing, so I don't know where to line it up to. If I get one, when I set the head to BTDC, do I set the crank to 0* or to the 16* or 17* mark?
The motor seems to run ok for a split second, then it bogs like usual. Once it runs and dies, I hear a buzzing noise, coming from the IACV... It doesn't do it when I first turn the key on, but after it starts and dies it will buzz. I have 12v at one connector and 0 at the other, so its not shorted. I noticed that there is a blue/yellow wire and a black/yellow wire.... Those aren't in any way connected to the distributor are they?? When I rewired the distributor, some wires were different on the dizzy than the DX harness, so I tried to follow them through the distributor the best that I could. Maybe I have a couple wires wrong??
Any help is greatly appreciated. Basically I just need some info on where the wires for the IACV go (diagram would be great), and how to time the motor mechanically. Thanks!

how did you set your cam gear? did you make sure everything was at top dead center?? perhaps your timing is off?? do you have a timing light? if so, do you have a lower timing cover? if ya do, shoot it with the light and see if you are even close. TDC is the 0 deg/white mark and 16 deg is the red one where you set the timing using the timing light from. if you had the upper timing cover you would set the white mark on the crank with the little mark on the cam gear on the arrow.
hope that helps
good luck

Whenever it runs (very craptastically though), it is right at 16*.
Does it matter to the IACV if it has coolant in it?? I wouldn't think so, especially since it isn't throwing a code....

bump, need some help
Ok, this is freaking me out. All the pictures I see of Z6's, the dizzy is slanted so the plug wires would be
.

Mine is flat -

The guy that owned the motor before said it was the Z6 dizzy... I have a good feeling its the Si dizzy because it had the OBD0 plugs on it (no big deal...), and the wires all matched the EF harness because they were the exact same wires as my old HB.
This is the distributor that is currently on the motor -

FYI, the open connector is for VTEC. I was just wondering, if this a CRX Si dizzy, the D15B7 dizzy would fit in place of the CRX Si dizzy perfectly right? So I would then have the OBD1 distributor...

That's not a D16Z6 distributor. Also, it looks like your spark plug wires need to be rotated clockwise one peg for them to be hitting the right cylinders at the proper times. Just remember, it's not going to kill your motor to turn it over with a different spark plug configuration, so take my advice and try rotating them clockwise one peg before you redo the timing belt.
I just had this very problem and, thanks to an incorrect diagram in a shitty Haynes manual, was frustrated for a good fifteen minutes before I decided that my intuition was correct.

The b7 distributor should fit perfectly, it werked perfectly fine when i had my mini me using the y8 vtec head

Check to make sure the plugs are in the right place. The tps and purge use the same style plug.
We had ours mixed up and the car wouldn't rev past 2000 due to not getting a accurate tps voltage.

seriously, the haynes manual is hit and miss, you might as well just wing it rather than use the haynes manual, intuition works better than that POS.
That distributor looks super wrong. i would put in a normal z6 dizzy, as well as switch to a p28 and finish the project.

Well, its a Y8 head as I found out earlier today. I put the B7 dizzy on it and it cranked right up. Its running awesome now that I timed it again. Thanks for all the help guys! I guess I just needed to think out loud lol.

90% of the time when you post on here you don't even get the answer you need, you just get it out of your head to not think of it and let the correct answer come into your head....or something like that
