Default several hours later...

first time i've done a tranny, by myself, using hand tools... so it's taken me awhile...

the other day, i couldn't shift my car into gear when the motor was on, only off. limped it home in second gear.

luckily, i had already bought an itr tranny, new clutch, and new flywheel, so i wasn't too distraught...

here's a picture of the culprit:

~40k of use. improper break-in.

Mine came out in several pieces. Two of the springs looked like grenade fragments. That's not half as bad as mine . You should be happy.

well, i broke it in by driving about 50 miles on the highway then i went drag racing on it.

whether or not that's why it died at 40k miles, i don't know.

i think what he is trying to say is that improper break in might cause the the clutch to slip or maybe not last as long but it definately wont make a hole in the clutch.

Did you miss a gear when this happened?

I agree. There's no magic coating on a clutch that takes 1,000 miles of easy driving to go away. You improperly break in a clutch by glazing it with high rpm launches and bad driving. It's hard to damage a clutch in the first 50 miles and have the effects show themselves 40,000 miles later.

Same thing with breaking in internals. If they aren't working properly in the first couple seconds after startup, something was done wrong during installation and the damage is already done. Yeah, you need to let rings seat and oil pressure settle before revving the **** out of something, but - again - there's no magic about 1,000 miles of easy driving that's going to drastically effect the longevity of a properly-assembled rotating assembly.

eh, i was mostly commenting on the wear on the disc after 40k, not the broken piece.
