Removing the crank shaft pulley bolt
Ok, I have searched around on this topic a lot and my question here is on the best way of securing the pulley so it doesn't spin when you torque on it with a breaker bar.
I'm a little bit scared of using the flywheel technique, it just seems like I'm going to break something. I also tried an electric impact wrench last night, but that wasn't powerful enough.
I read about another way of stoping the pulley from spinning where you stick rags in the cylinders and then bolt the head back on. that way when you torque the pulley the cylinders push against the rags and then the head and stop everything from moving. I want to try this out, but I'm scared I'm going to break something. Is there any reason this would hurt the engine?

i wouldn't try the rag idea. sounds a little dangerous to me. cause what happens when the pistons come up, hit the rags, and then once the rags give way, hit the valves, then bend the valves possibly. i'd personally just take it down to a local shop have have them put an impact on it to break it loose. most of them probably won't even charge you to do it, and if they do it'll only be like a couple of bucks probably.
hmm, I didn't think about the valves. I'm doing a head swap so I don't really care what happens to my old head. I may end up taking it to a shop, but I already took off the top half of my engine so I would have to tow it.. and that wouldn't be fun. Thanks reminding me about those pesky valves
flywheel technique is the bomb you wont break anything. i used a 2 foot snap on screwdriver held in place by a tranny bolt and two flywheel bolts and torqued my pulley bolt to over 800 ft/lbs if that **** doesn't break then, it won't break when you do it.

I had heard of putting rope or rags into the cylinder..
For some unlucky sole I have read of,The rope hung a valve open and it got bent..
I have also heard of people cracking the transmission bell-housing
by trying to wedge the fly-wheel..
The best bet is a good impact with a six-point socket that fits the bolt tightly..

wow thats pretty unbelievable considering the only bolts larger than the tranny housing bolts are...welll....engine mount bolts, and thats th ones that hold the engine to the frame....unbelieveable....i
Since I don't care if I screw up my old head would the rag way be the safest way to stop the pulley from moving? Basically I'd rather kill my old head then break open the tranny. I definitly realize a nice impact wrench is the best way to go and I'm looking for a place to rent one from, but if that fails I need a back up plan.

I made a pulley remover out of steel gas pieces from lowes. I put a 18" pipe wrench on my contraption and lowered the car to hold it in place. Took one day and three trips to lowes to design the holder and 1.5 hrs to get the bolt loosened. Next time i'll use an impact.

not my bad boy IR Impact Titanium SOB nut wouldn't come off at all. I played for awhile with it damn 1000lb ft tq couldn't get it off. I said f*ck I didn't want it anyways
