Default F'in crank pulley will not come off!

i have been trying to get this crank pulley off for 2 days!! it does not want to come off one bit.

First i tried with a 17mm socket and a electric impact, then i tried heating up the head of the bolt then using the impact.

Next i tried heating it up and using a heavy duty air compressor impact, didnt work.

Finally we put the breaker bar on, layed the tired under it and cranked it over so the bar would hit the wheel and hopefully break it loose but the only thing it broke was the socket

So what the hell do i do next????? any other ways besides puttin it in gear and holding the brakes or shoving a screwdriver in the flywheel (because neither work).

on my old 454 in my truck i used a pair of vise grips on the flywheel it was hell to get them shut but one i was able to get it they didn't budge, jst clamp 'em on and trun till they lock up against the tranny housing

btw heating up the head of the bolt was actually just working against yous seeing how metal expands when heated

i hope your compressor isn't overly dinky... big impacts like air.. you can rent big ones if you need too.. (impacts or compressors)

Depending upon where you are in south NJ, you're welcome to come up to Bergen county and we can loosen it with my impact gun (guaranteed to remove the bolt), and then tighten it enough to get you back down home again.

When you used the impact did you use a long *** extension?

If so try it again with an extension that is as short as possible.

You need a decent size compresser as well. I used to have a 5hp 30 or 40 gallon and it worked fine.

this was also a pain in the *** for me when i had to take mine off.

solution:

put the 17mm socket onto an extention, and then onto a breaker bar. take the full length of the handle of the jack and extend the breaker bar to about 5-6 feet long. have someone sit in the car, put the transmission in gear, and step on the brakes. use the breaker bar and break the crank pulley bolt loose.

this procedure worked for me. when the crank pulley bolt finally snaps loose, it will crack really loud... hope this helps.

This was a pain in the *** for me too, more trouble than the axel nuts everyone is whining about.

Solution: layed the engine on its side on a tire to get more leverage locked up the flywheel with a screw driver and an engine stand plate and had at it with a good strong 3/4 inch 17mm socket and a 5 foot breaker bar, cracked loose, I was so happy, it took me like a week to come up with that setup.

good luck happy holidays

thanks alot for the offer, but the car is chillin in my garage with no timing belt. thats why we need it off to change the timing belt. we are thinkin about saying **** it and breaking the timing cover so my freidn will have his car back. I have a huge tanks its about the size of a oil heater tank for a home. we tried the hold in the brakes and put it in gear but it still spins even with a regular breaker bar?? whats that about? yea once i get some money again i will buy that crank bolt tool just to have it for later and hopefully the car will be driving by then hah.

BUMP! Thanks guys, merry christmas

No problem. Since it sounds as if your compressor is sufficient, the weak link must be your impact gun. If your budget doesn't allow for the purchase of a very high-powered gun, you can attempt to find someplace local to rent one (mine is a 3/4" Craftsman that has never failed to remove any bolt we've used it on). Otherwise, you could buy the gun from Sears, remove the bolt with it, and then return it when you're finished. While obviously not the most honest approach, there really isn't any harm in doing that as long as you don't damage the gun at all.

3/4 air gun with only a ten gallon air tank. i know that's not much of a tank at all but it has worked uncountable times. i've tried a 1/2 gun and they don't do **** with the little volume of air that i had. if you have a small tank get ahold of a larger gun and hose and it should work everytime.

Yes, the gun is indeed the more important piece in these situations. It normally only takes mine a single 2-3 second blast to remove the bolt, so a tremendous volume of air isn't critical.
