S2000 or Porsche Boxster...what would you choose?
This is not my choice...my wife has her S2000 already, but my brother, who last summer was in a pretty serious motorcycle accident and has decided to hang the helmet up (atleast on the street goes) and is going to be coming into a nice bit of cash soon...he works at a local automotive brokerage and we've been discussing a few cars lately that he's thinking about getting...over that time he's come to a decision between 2 cars mainly (though not ruling others out, these are the 2 that fit him best)...and i know this is a Honda forum, so most people would naturally be prone to say S2000 without consideration, but really think about it...if you were in the position, which would you choose and why, i just want to get some feedback and see what some of you guys would say, given alot of you own an S2000, and im sure have a good knowledge on the Porsche Boxtser...heres the choices...
2003 Honda S2000 - GPW with black leather (i can honestly say ive never seen one with black interior, it was usually blue or tan, but this one has black, and it looks incredible...) Bone stock...as far as we know its never been modded (previous owner was in his 50's) and has 8,000 georgia road miles (so no salt or snow crap to worry about, and no coastline wear and tear to worry about)...Garage kept, all honda service records (mainly 2 oil changes and one service for a headlight going out prematurely)...one owner, never smoked in and no animals. Basically MINT condition...$22,000.
2000 Porsche Boxster - Black metallic with black leather, harmon kardon headunit with eclipse speakers in dash and doors, HID's (aftermarket installed, look great), 18" BBS LM's (awesome rim with a nice sized lip and near perfect tires), thing is in incredible condition and has NO swirl marks in the paint, garage kept, non smoker, everything on the engine is stock...30,000 miles on it (with all service records from local porsche dealership)...basically one of the nicest Boxsters ive ever seen...$23,000.
...both cars are "As Is" but they have a nice warranty program where he works (which is where i bought my CL Type-S and can vouch for the warranty)...both cars are just incredible examples of well taken care of cars, and given their in nearly identical shape, the dollar amounts are really no worry on either, it just comes down to which is the better car. The Boxster is NOT the "S" model (it would have already been in his garage if it were) but even given that, its an awesome car, good power, great handling...but so is the S2000, so you see his (our) predicament.
What would you guys choose...and for what reason? (give it some thought...its easy just to name one, but to really offer an opinion, its always nice to read what others think about 2, what i feel are very comperable cars after owning one and driving the other a good bit).

I have never driven a Porsche Boxster so I couldn't give you my full opinion. I have always felt it was a lil over priced for performance. The S is equal if not better in performance #'s. But then the Boxster is a Porsche. you get the Bling. If I had to choose, i would take both out for a spin and see which one I would fall in love with. Hope that helps
Yeah man...i was the same way at first, thought to myself that i had always heard the Boxster was kind of underpowered (non "S") for the price they asked for it...but then i drove it, and to be 100% honest with you, it felt tighter than the S2000, it wasnt as fast, and it didnt have the high redline to play with like the S2000 has (its decent but not 9K...lol) but it handled like my brother's old MR2 did, like its on rails...but thats not to say anything against the S2000's handling characteristics because the difference between the 2 cars was so minimal, lol...well...thats where we sit, a situation of choosing between 2 great cars, that feel very VERY similar.
(i must admit the Boxster being mid engine probobly does alot for it handling wise, so given the S2000's FR setup, id have to probobly say the S2000's handling is more IMPRESSIVE than the boxster's, because if the S2000 were mid engine, well damn...lol. But the Boxster sure does have a great exhaust note...that i cant deny it)

It just varies really. The interior is much more comfortable. But, if he's not looking at an S, then he's looking at the base model of the entry level Porsche, which IMO... well, is cheap thrills and not much performance.
first off i would say definately drive both....
then i would say, everything i have read says that the s2k is more of a drivers car ( track car) than the porsche.... handles better on the track and so forth...(once again this is what i have read) i have never driven a porsche...
however, on the "it's a porsche" note.... i would say who cares... the s2k is still a fairly rare car to see on the street...(depending on where you live)... i constantly have people ask me what kind of car i am driving.....
also, i would say that maintainence costs would be lower on the s2k... once again not having owned a porsche, this is just speculation.....
the porsche just doesn't impress me... now, if it were a 911... hands down i would go with the porsche...
good luck....

Yeah...its not an "S", at that price there'd have to be something wrong with it had it been.
But even at that...it is a base entry model Porsche, but when i think about it, its kind of like saying the 360 Modena is the base entry level Ferrari (if you will...), its an incredible car, and is probobly atleast on 90% of the people of the worlds dream car list, but it is the bottom of the barrell when it comes to Ferrari's.
The interior of the Boxster is one of the MAIN plus's it has on the S2000 in my opinion, more room, aftermarket radio and speakers (which sound great) and very comfy seats for a sports roadster.
Maintenance isnt an issue as both cars will have the same warranty...based on that aspect i wouldnt even consider ANY european car, just from my own accounts...but with a warranty, you dont have to worry. Hell, i wouldnt own my CL Type-S had there been no warranty with it...lol.
And trust me...he's driven both plenty of times (he's the lot manager and porter so he drives them for a living, lol...) I wish we could take them to a track and really push them, but we'd probobly end up breaking both and giving them back battered and bruised...hahaha.
Also, i should mention that this will not be his daily driver, he has a beater cavalier that gets him where he needs to go so it wont see the same mileage many of us put on our cars every month/year....

Im tired of these types of threads, but anyways
you cant compare a boxster to a 360 being entry level, worst analogy ever.
I'm a porsche fan, but not a boxster fan, look at the reliability record of boxsters to 911's, not even close. while the boxster sports a porsche emblem, its not even remotely on the same level as the 911. the s2000 will eat up the boxster in about every aspect (except for the prestige brandname) and luxury. and if he is looking for luxury, dont buy a roadster anyways.

having been under a boxster the other day, i can tell you that i would not want one.
i am not sure what your plans are for this thing but in terms of ease of modification, the boxster is not a good choice at all. also the boxster is more expensive to modify.

Well...for starters, im sorry your tired of these types of threads...i'm sure you'll get over it.
That said...i wasnt trying to make some incredible analogy about the porsche and the ferrari...i was just saying that saying entry level porsche is like saying entry level ferrari when your comparing companies...its still a porsche, and its not like its just some little focus or civic slapped together with cost cutting in mind...its a porsche, even at an entry level status.
Im assuming that you've had very little experience behind the wheel of the boxster, because saying the S2000 will eat it up is a little far fetched, i wouldnt own the boxster myself, and we do own an S2000, and i can tell you that that mid engined roadster is a great car in many aspects...and in no way was i trying to compare this car to the 911, your preaching to the choire on that one friend, being that i am truely a 911 enthusiast...(and hopefully will get to own my 1996 TT 993 one day...lord willing).
As i explained before, the maintenance isnt an issue...the car will have a warranty, otherwise i would have not even considered helping him entertain the thought of a european car, regardless of track record...warranty is full bumper to bumper, so its like buying it new.
i appreciate your input, but how about this...go drive the car before making assumptions as to their characteristics (negatively or positively)...or maybe just read up on specs a little more...you will see how very close the 2 cars are in comparison, but im not trying to convince you, and you dont like these kind of threads so yeah...whatever.
Also...i never said he was looking for a luxery car, i said that these 2 cars fit him nearly perfectly for what he was looking for, the boxster just happened to be a bit more comfortable (he is about my size...6'4...210-215lbs) so the S2000 is slightly cramped...but that doesnt detract much because this wont be a daily driver, it was just a perk the boxster had...that and given he's had an MR2 turbo in the past for a good bit of time, he likes the feel of an MR platform...but has no REAL preference between the 2 cars based solely on that.

Jesus Christ you sound like my mother. Sorry man thats how I feel about it but if it comes to performance give me 240 VTEC Horses over the 201 MR ponies of the porshe boxster there are you happy with that response ***!
most porsche guys laught at boxsters, they dont even deserve to be called a porsche honestly. we have owned 2 s2k's modified and stock, and my girlfriends mom has a 99 boxster with about 15k miles. The boxster handles pretty good, has NO power for what it should be, but sounds really really good. Other than that the car is a pretty big pile in my opinion, interior sucks (so does the s2k, but the boxster REALLY sucks) and I was not impressed with the overall quality. Buy the s2k!

Ironically, Fifth Gear choose the Boxster over the S2K, but that was the S model Porsche.
This is a simply decision
If you want a Drivers car S2k = Track Breed Car, Track Runs, Canyon Carver, Fun Spirited Drives
If you want a Daily Driver Boxster = Daily Bling Driving Car, Cruising, My name is Henery the 3rd, I drive a Porsche & I'm a hair-dresser , Luxury

actually you're quite wrong, I bet i have more experience in a porsche that most people. considering I have a 2004 cayenne sitting in the garage 100 feet away from me (not a sports car i know), but the mere fact ive tracked my uncles 911 on multiple occasions, tracked my best friends sisters boxster (base model not s) on the same day and same track as my s2k when it was continously slower with my best friend and me driving it then my s2000. its pig slow, good balance, but doesnt get the job done.

well ive driven and tracked both a 911 and boxster, driven a 911 turbo on the street and drive a cayenne on a regular basis, so i dont have to make assumptions, i made those statements because i have real life experience in porsche cars.

I have a feeling most people ragging on Boxsters have never driven one.
I've driven everything from NSXs, Vipers, Supra TTs, Vettes, S2000s, Porsches and M3/M5s.
Nothing drives like a Boxster S. The car sticks to the pavement like no other. Is it faster than the 911? No way. Does it handle better? YES! It's a mid-engine car, unlike the rear-engine 911, the harder you push it in corners the harder it sticks. It's an unbelievable car.
The S2000 doesn't have squat on a late model Boxster S. Drive one, you'll see what I'm talking about.

I never asked for you to make the choice for him, you give yourself way too much credit. I've been here for a good while and figured that i'd post up to see what others thought about the comparisons of these 2 cars, i understand this is a tech forum, and i was asking people to give their opinions of the 2 cars based on tech specs and what they've experienced...i figured that since many of you guys (im guessing at times even you) can give a legitimate response without expressing how they are "Tired of these threads" because to be quite honest, i could give a **** if your tired of these kind of threads, if yur tired of them, dont read them, or delete them since that seems to be what your trying to use to convince me of something, i still cant figure out what.
Anyways...i appreciate peoples input, i wasnt asking you guys to make a choice, i was sitting at work, kinda bored and thought to myself "Hey, the guys on Honda-Tech in the S2000 room have one of the best roadsters ever made, i wonder how they'd stack up the boxster vs. the honda..." so i posted this, i've seen alot dumber threads, and the only reason you dont consider this a tech thread is because "Your tired of these kind of threads" as you said. Maybe if you took a moment instead of posting that to say something like "Hey man, ive tracked this car and i can tell you, though it handles well, its pretty slow and underpowered" Im not asking for a friend or "Buddy" in this case, i dont care if you guys like me, hate me, dont care or dont read...but hell, i figured some guys like yourself, with car knowledge would be able to give me some fair and legitimate opinions.
With that said...this is my brother's choice, he doesnt even post here, he could care less what you guys think, i on the other hand have posted a good bit here and just kinda browse around reading threads and stuff...i asked a comparison question and i got some good answers, and i got opinion which i expected, and thats fine...so Mase, just to let you know, the attitude, thats cool man, if thats the way you feel you need to talk to me to make a point or to express your opinion, then theres nothing i can do about it but read what you put, kinda pick out the parts i actually want to take with more than a grain of salt and the rest i'll just let roll off my back, but seriously man, i wasnt trying to be some idiot newbie like your speaking to me as, just because i posted a thread to get opinion on a couple of, what i consider nice roadsters for the money...just keep in mind, i wasnt looking to any of you guys to make a choice, just some opinions and some talk...this is a message board, its on topic for the room, why not talk about it? We got like 10 posts in here about putting 19's on the S2000, or what is the best launch RPM when street racing, people trying to sell stuff, and i post a legitimate thread, just to chat about the cars, and you seem to act too good to bother, so why do it in the first place? Is it too much to ask to discuss a couple of cars on this car website...discuss them at length and see what people really think? Does every thread have to ask technical maintenance questions about the S2000 to be something worth your time to read? If so...lock this down.
Thanks again to everyone, including mase, and id sure love to keep discussing the differences and peoples opinions, that is of course if it doesnt bunch anyone elses panties up...

I really wish we had a Boxster "S" to choose from in this situation, they've had a couple and that truely is a great car all around, between that and the S2000, i myself would have a tough choice picking one, and i am very much sided with the honda compared with most cars...

the reason i say im tired of the threads, along with all the other stupid threads you have mentioned are because people dont search.
it took me less than 3 seconds to find these threads on the s2k vs. boxster topic:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=230356
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=292630
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=556655
so no, read the rules, this thread isnt exactly legitmate, but i will let it slide since you are being fairly respectful.

I actually did read the first thread about the Boxster "S" before i posted this...which is why i was trying to make it clear that i wasnt talking about the "S" model in my initial post...
The car and driver thread i saw a good while back, but honestly didnt think about it, and that 2nd thread i unfortunately did not see...i apologize for that but when i was looking around (and yes, i usually do search things out, i did for a few minutes before posting this thread)...
But anyways...i just wanted to discuss it, those threads are long dead, and im one who likes to just talk cars all day to make my work day go by faster...anyways, thanks for leaving it open...and if anyone else has any information they'd like to share, please do, i still feel, even after reading the replies in here and the other threads, that the Boxster is a great car...i like its mid engined platform, felt very solid, but i respect the negative with positive, i just would like to hear more explinations than just "That car sucks" or "That car is slow"...Mase provided me with some background of track history he's had with them...anyone else have experience pushing the Boxster fairly hard (street or track)...?
