S2000 vs 1997 or 1998 Porsche Boxster???
Yo guys, I have a really nice S2000 but I have been given the chance to purchase a really nice Boxster. Why would I not buy the Boxster? Idea's?
I really like the feel of the Porsche and the look, I have always wanted one but now I think I might miss the rawness of the VTEC. I know the boxster is slow but the overall German Quality is what I like.
Thoughts? Comments?
Thanks

You answered your own question..
But go drive one first.. see if you can put it through all the same routines that your S2000 takes you through. Then decide. Buying and selling cars isn't something that most people can do on a whim.

German quality is a myth. Porsche never built a trully reliable car until the 911 (996) came out. Honda built the first reliable supercar in 1991 with the NSX.
Porsche can be now considered very reliable nowdays, but i still think Honda quality still exceeds porsche quality.
S2000 is a better car than the base boxster in terms of performance. Look wise, boxster has better looking front end, but back end looks like a cockroach.

From what I hear..and I hear alot of things..early boxers arent very reliable. So I would have to say get a used NSX
seriously get the S2000. IMO U cant go wrong.
BTW japanese build quality is supposedly the best, they aint Panzar tanks, but they are good fit and finish with supposedly amazing reliablity...I cant say..I still perfer BMWs.

I`ve had the change to drive a few Boxsters and Boxstar S for a weekend, and My own car is an S2000.
Before I was more sceptical about the Boxster, now I like it a bit more.
What I like about the Boxster is the sound of the engine and the torque at low Rpm.
Also the interior is nice (they were all full option) but that costs about 25000 USD extra.
Don't by a tiptronic because that sucks big time, it handles like an ordinary automatic, and you loose quite some power with it.
The performance of the Boxster S is a bit better than the S2000, and the standard Boxster a bit less, but it is not that big of a difference (my impression).
I prefer the look of the S2000 but that is personal, and I now know it is a difficult choice to make, I think I would still keep the S2000 (they should have put a 6 cylinder engine in it then the choice was very easy).

Go out one day, have a little "spirited" drive to the dealership with your S2000. At the dealership, have a little "spirited" test drive (hopefully the sales will let you) with the Boxster. After that, all your questions should be answered.
IMO, the Boxster is a terrible looking car, especially the rear. From a side view, I think it looks like there's 2 front sides to the car.

anyone who thinks german quality is a myth has no direct experience working on german cars. their engineering is Number One, hands down. But like others have said, drive both, and I also encourage you to try out an M Roadster, similar pricing, perhaps a bit quicker.

I used to drive an M Roadseter but it wasn't mine so I really never got hit with any problems. One of my more favorite vehicles actually. I have an S2K an I have driven the Boxster, I like the sound of the Boxer engine, this is what is making me lean toward the car.
Thanks So far.

You guys all joke about this and that but DID you know that
Porsche was the apparent make of VTEC. Honda only had VTEC when they purchased the patent from Porsche. This can and will be verified by an article that I read on the net a few years back. Honda purchased the patent from Porsche back in the 1980's and that is why there is VTEC in honda, with this realization you can make a choice. Granted this is only news, but it really did happen. As much as I like Honda, Porsche was the inventor of VTEC and credit needs to be given where credit is due!

The performance of the Boxster S is a bit better than the S2000
Motor Trend 0-60, 1/4 mile
S2000 5.2, 13.8
Boxster S 5.4, 13.9
Road & Track 0-60, 1/4 mile
S2000 5.5, 14.1
Boxster S 5.6, 14.0
Which means that, by spending $20K more than an S2000 to get a Boxster S, you get... nothing.
If you're looking at a base Boxster, rather than a Boxster S - and it sounds like you are - then there's no contest at all.

Such ignorance is bliss.
If you were in the 80's and read the articles, Honda got patents from Porsche
RETART
go search around I am postive it is there.
I read it on s2ki.com

Well, whether one company invented variable valve timing before another company is not going to determine which car he wants to buy. It's good to gather opinions from people who own the specific cars you're comparing, but eventually, you'll go out and drive both cars. After all, you're buying the cars to DRIVE them, so go out and drive them, see which one floats your boat, and make your decision.
From what I know variable cam is nothing new, but VTEC's specific implementation of how the second cam is actuated was developed by Honda.
I'm about to get an s2000 in jan. If you want my opinion, what car do you know redlines at 9000 rpms stock? It depends on what your looking for. If it's a race car, stick with the s2000, but if your looking for the name, then get the porsche
I'll just chime in here for a minute and say that I was pretty underwhelmed w/ the early Boxsters. My former boss bought one and while not bad, was nothing to write home about. The 201 HP engine is nothing special - acceleration-wise, it didn't show me anything compared to my 97 Prelude. It was a pretty twitchy car too - he was in his 50s and a fairly conservative driver and the back end came around on him a couple of times in emergency maneuvers. He was also diligent about keeping it clean/garaged and the interior was showing unusual wear/deterioration. Of course his car was a total daily driver. Given the years you are looking at, personally I would choose the S2K. To me, the S is the only Boxster I would even think of trading an S2K for...

the new boxster has better gearing and a little more torque. both the performance and the interior quality are supposed to be a lot better

why not just have both ? or just go buy the porsche and i'll swap on the weekends with you ....you can either drive my s2k or my R ....if you buy dinner once in a while we'll go for a rip in the nsx ......
Go back and read who posted the article.
Any how, this same article praised Honda for their joint development on the first ever "Tiptronic" Automatic transmission. Oh yeah, in the same article Honda gave Porche the marketing plans for the Boxster too!
Dude, you actually believe that article? Spend five minutes performing researching your claims and I'll provide the Crow on Silver Serviceware.
My last addenda: If you believe Porche's are reliable, you haven't owned one.
On the other hand, the Boxster has a nicer interior. Some people actually give a rip. Remember folks, for most people car ownership is very subjective. Take the Pontiac Aztec for instance, there are actually people who like the lines.

i personally know a salemen at my job that has a blue boxster and he is tired of it. he has told me several times that he wished he had gotten the s2k instead. btw i think the boxster looks odd, looks like an egg on wheels. the s2k looks great, performs awesome, has honda reliability, excellent interior and incredible handling.
