Default Sparco Harness bar and the like (and some R patronizing).

So I figured I would ask this question in the type-R forum since the majority of R owners are knowledgeable via the obligation an R. Is the Sparco (or any other harness bar) a safe/certified way to add racing harness, or is it a necessity that you wrap the harness around a cage?

if the bar it self and the harnesses are mounted correctly it is safe to an extent, your still at risk in a rollover, if you roll in stock belts you can move your head to the side or move so you head isnt crushed if the roof caves in, if you have harnesses on you wont be able to move at all in a roll over and you might smash your head on the roof in a roll over

at least get a roll bar, ie kirk, autopower, its a 4 point style two points behind the seats with a hoop and two bars that go back to the trunk, the best and safest whould be a full cage basically same as 4 point roll bar, but has bars that go over the door way down to the front floor by the dash and some have bars that go across the door, there all different

you just gotta ask yourself what your gonna do with your car, autox mild spirited driving, show ***, you could get away with the harness bar and some 4 point harnesses

hpde, track events more serious racing, either the rollbar whould be enough or if you wanted you could go with the full cage

sorry for the long post its 4 in the morning and i cant sleep, please correct me if i gave any wrong information

and of course if your going all out racing , youd def want the full cage, but if your at this level you whouldnt be asking about harness bars

ask yourself what you will use your harness bar for. if you autocross, i would say it is an advantage with little worries because the likelihood of a rollover is slim. i would not use the harnesses on the street however. finally, if this is for the tracks, rollbar definitely.

Wait, I thought if you had a 4 pt you had to remove your back seats?

Maybe it's just because all the cars I have ever taken notice to with rollbars have been R-speed stunners

Well, the addition of the rollbar makes sitting in the back seat both dangerous and uncomfortable.

Not to mention when you remove all the junk in the rear there is quite a bit more room to carry other junk.

harness bars are an excellent way to get good driver position and support while auto-xing. Harness bars ARE NOT safety devices and should not be used on the street or on the track. If you roll a car and you're wearing harnesses w/o a rollbar/cage you're going to be at more of a risk than you would be with a 3 pt seat belt.

When I first got my Type R, I had installed the Sparco Harness bar with Takata Harnesses. Due to some VERY serious safety issues that many of you pointed out, I quickly realized how dangerous those things really are. For starters...puting friends in the back seat is absolutely off limits. Second, you are seriously puting yourself at risk of serious injury or death, in the event that you were ever in a roll over.

What is funny is that for the price Sparco is charging for that harness bar, you can buy yourself an NHRA certified 6 point cage which will actually function properly and save your life.

Regardless if you go with a proper roll bar or cage or that shitty little harness bar, do yourself a favor and take the back seat out so you can do a proper job.

I'm actually in the process of reevaluating my current roll bar to make it much more safer since I'm going up in HP. I may just replace it with a six-point cage.

Aloha,
Brandon
