h22a swap in my 1996 prelude need help!!!
Hello fellow prelude owners...
A few months ago I swapped in a jdm h22a in my 1996 Prelude Si. It came with the engine, tranny, and ecu. I had a buddy of mine do the swap at his shop.
Now heres the problem: CEL is on for: o2 sensor #1 (replaced), TP sensor, Map sensor, VTEC solenoid valve defect. The car runs very rich and spits out black smoke from the exhaust (even at idle). The car is extremely sluggish, if you give it full throttle, the rpm needle won't budge. It's getting terrible gas mileage, and just keeping up with traffic is a problem. Also fuel cut off is at around 6000-6500 rpms.
Now heres the real kick... I've taken it to two "import specialists" and both are boggled and seem like they don't have very much knowledge on the jdm h22a's. I've also tried to take it to the Honda dealership, and they refuse to look at my car since it has a "motor swap." One of the mechanics said that he couldn't find the map sensor???
At this point I don't know what to do, there are basically no shops around town, and I can't keep dumping all my money into the gas tank!
So if anyone can help I would really appriciate it, anyone else had this problem??

I just did that swap in my brother's car, which was a 1996 SI with a JDM h22.. Now, do you have a Map sensor, I doubt it.. If its not on top of the throttle body, then you don't, and its possible you have the wrong plug pluged into your TPS (sensor on the back of the throttle body)
1996 model prelude's had the map sensor on the throttle body, while 1992-1995 had them mounted on the firewall.. if you are using a JDM motor, I doubt the map sensor is on the throttle body (not sure, can't remember), so basically, you don't have one, which will cause the majority of your issues.
Once you figure that out, let us know, but I think you probably have more then one problem.

Well I just checked to see if my throttle body had a sensor on it, and nope it doesn't. So this means I'm running with no MAP sensor at all?? What can I do about this??

Sorry for all the questions, but... where would the wires and the plug that is supposed to be plugged into the map sensor supposed to be?? I looked and didn't see any extra plugs laying under the hood. Does this make any sense??

They are there, just look harder... I have a throttle body for sale with a map sensor on it if you need it, just e-mail me @ honda318dx@aol.com

yeah they are right, i did this swap also.....
your map code can be addressed with any honda map sensor, tb mount or not....just run a vac line to it and plug the connector in....
if they used your obd2 engine harness then(most likely):
the tps sensor plug should have a yellow, green, and red wire
and the map sensor plug should have two yellow wires and a green one....

even if you get it, it would not work because jdm ecu would not pass smog.

hey man.. interesting q'n... i had a 96 (theft recovery) so i needed an engine like you... but i gave up .. no one had any clue wtf to do with it.. lol..
and i was getting quotes ranging from 4-6gs just to swap an engine in it and make it run lol..
hope you can do a write up or atleast a nice summary of what you needed to do to make the thing work..
but the map sensor issue.. i heard about grabbing the usdm intake manifold trick.. but i cant see why the mounting on the firewall wouldnt work with a new sensor.. try your old IM see if it works... prob the cheapest way to go for now.. (trial and error) good luck..

Yea I've been dealing with this engine swap since early summer!! I didn't know it would be this much of a pain in the ***! The swap was actually pretty easy, just a matter of plugging in everything in the right spot. So far the only extra thing I've needed for the swap is an extended throttle cable. Oh and just remember to put in the tranny fluid too! Hope you didn't already sell the lude, I'd say go for the swap
mrlover, I ditched all of my old engine parts. Stupid of me
Well Monday I'm going try to get the map sensor, I'll fill you guys in.
Thanks for all the sugestions!

lol.. its easy to drop in an engine.. its not too easy to make it run.. and its pretty f-en hard to make it run properly expecially when your jumping from obd2 to obd1.. lol
sold the shell to satansrv.. lol dunno if he still has it
i wish i had it still tho.. i would have loved to have done ths wapp.. but had abit of too much work to do on it.. lol needed some body work and two front seats and ignition.. lol flex lines on the front.. a few things as i said lol would have cost me too much time and money in the long run.. needed a car.. so bought a 92 h23..
now i need to rebuild my tranny and grab a clutch lol btu wasted 400 on my rubbers so got to wait a while

It is possible that you have a vacuum leak somewhere,tp sensor out of range or a loose connection at the map sensor
