Default Is it VTEC?

i'm still a lil bit new to the whole sport compact thing, but in my '96 HX there's supposed to be a D16 SOHC Vtec-e. A guy i know looked at the motor and said it's not VTEC bcuz it'll say it very small on the valve cover. another said it IS because it has some valve/senor thing that only VTECs have. How do I know?

yes the VTEC solenoid should be a connector on the side of the cylendar head with a green plug on it. Maybe someone has a pic for you to see.

Look at the block code located (if facing the engine from the front of the car) just to the left of the header. If it says D16Y5 then it is the stock HX engine, which is a 115hp VTEC-E regardless of what the valvecover does or doesn't say.

1992-1993 and 1996-2000 SOHC VTEC engines do NOT say VTEC on them. Only 1994-1995 ones did.

Just for an info (not trying to bash) it's a solenoid, switch is inside the plate that's what the green plug is for. Solenoid the big cylinder thing uses one wire.
