Tranny not goin into 3rd Gear all the time, grinding, wont downshift into 3rd HELP !
ok my tranny seems like its been acting up lately and getting worse little by little. Well, now it sometimes goes into 3rd gear and sometimes slips out and grinds. Since i got the car when i go into 3rd sometimes it would grind at redline. sometimes it does and sometimes it dont. Now, all the sudden today it wont downshift into 3rd gear. it will go up 1-5 driving fine. but now wont donshift to 3rd. just feels weird sometimes when im shifting. i have a b16 with b16 jdm hydro tranny, itr linkage, dc sports shortshifter. shifter bushings also, but only one is on not the other. give me some idea onto what is wrong or if anyone has or had these problems. thanks. also, i would like to know how much it is to get a new third gear synchro or if i should just get all of them. i wana keep the tranny b/c im goan put lsd in it b/c im goin turbo. let me know thanks alot.
You need at the very least a new 3rd gear synchro. You'll have to call around locally if you want to know how much they cost or how much it will be to fix it.
It's always gotta be the damn 3rd gear!!!
What is it with Honda's and weak 3rds.
Depending on your circumstances, I would say look for a cheapo ls tranny, through that on there for a little bit while you take your time and rebuild the b16. You may as well throw an LSD in there while you're at it. Then you'll have a nice fresh, badass b16 tranny ready for next spring.

yeah when im racing its sometimes ahrd to slam or even go into 3rd gear its a bitch and maybe its the tranny fluid get it changed?
In all seriousness, just bleed the transmission. It worked for me a while back. It still does it from time to time but very infrequently.
The only thing you can do is use the GM Synchrmesh FRICTION MODIFIED trammy fluid. It's not super cheap but it's far less than changing the synchro at the moment. It has helped a lot of people with grinding issues although yours sounds pretty severe.

Either skip 3rd altogether, or learn how to double-clutch while upshifting. Otherwise synchromesh might hold you over till the new parts are available.

All you can do is A) Nothing, B) Synchromesh (FM), C) Fix it, D) Swap it. Those are ALL your options and only the first 2 are possible if you have no money so I think you already have your answer....

I have the same problem on my USDM ITR transmission, I was double-clutching 3rd & 4th, but took tranny out to fix it. Put my GSR Tranny back in till I rebuild the ITR.
Anybody know where I can get a repair manual on Honda Transmissions, preferably a ITR one in .pdf

well i had the same problem in my car. i ended up pulling it apart and saw that the syncros were almost perfect. there was like no fluid in it though. i also noticed that the 1-2 shift fork was broken but i dunno if that affected 3rd gear. i wouldnt think it would. change your fluid first!
