Default ABS Bad?

I was just searching some posts on power stearing on how to drain the system and i ran across posts about ppl wanting to put power stearing in their car...well some ppl said "No, P/S is bad and ABS is bad". What is so bad about it? isnt it suppsoed to give more control and not have the wheels lock up?

The wheels can still lock up, it just applies different amounts of pressure to the brakes when it sense a lock up. Its not a bad thing to have but i figure if your going to hit something your going to hit it.

alot of people dont like it for auto cross and stuff, less predictible than non abs in performance applications. but on a car that is a daily driver it is a good thing.

BAD. if something goes bad it is really expensive to get it fixed. also it slows you down a lot slower than if you just knew how to break in the first place. my friend went into the ditch because the abs wouldn't let him slow down quick enough. abs is for people who don't know how to control their own breaking, like old people, so they let the computer do it for them. just my .02

the distance change you stop inisnt that great, ill guarntee if he locked it would only have stopped a few feet shorter, still in the ditch.

ABS only allows you to retain control of the vehicle in adverse situations, braking hard while turning, in dirt, in rain, etc.

oh and it does NOT allow you to lock your wheels when braking, it maintains a 17-19% skid in an ABS stop.

ABS didn't cause your friend to wind up in a ditch; he just lost control of his car.

thats what i was thinking, about the friend goin into a ditch, the abs didnt cause him goin into it, he jsut lost control. its not like if he suddenly didnt have it he would stop on a dime and everything would be all spiffy. i got the abs becasue im just usinghte civic for daily driving.

That http://www.howstuffworks.com said it all. "even a pro driver can't stop as fast as a bad driver in a car with ABS. I looked for a Civic four a YEAR before I found a 5-speed EX sedan with the ABS option.

I was never a fan of ABS before. But a lot of it has to do with ignorance.

My EM1 has ABS and I have to say I like it. It is one less thing to think about.

In a panic situation you think about braking but don't always remember to pump the brakes so they lock and you lose traction.

With ABS you just nail the brake pedal and smoothly drive around whatever obstacle is in your path.

I find my car stops really quickly and straight with out any drama and little tire noise. This is provided that you have good tires which I do.

I'm sure the dog that ran in front my car the other day is happy I had ABS or he would probably be dead now.

Close... ABS means anti lock braking system. It pumps the calipers on and off the pads to keep them from just locking the wheels up, which helps better to slow the car than just sliding. I've never seen a car with ABS lock the wheels and skid to a stop.

An aftermarket system I presume? or did ABS come on EM1s in Canada? There was no ABS option on EM1s in the states.

All EM 1's in Canada came with ABS standard. I love the option in my car personally, not only has it saved a few animals but I absolutely love it on the local road course race track. The course I race on locally has a lot of small studder bumps in the pavement when entering the corners. I found that I could charge really hard into the corners and absolutely STAND on the brakes and the car would slow down and maintain excellent control through the corner. I decided to pull the ABS fuse to see how the car would handle without the ABS and it was night and day. The bumps would cause the wheels to lock up when "hopping" over the bumps and it really made the car unstable when entering the corners, I damn near went off the track a couple times! My lap times slowed down considerably and while I'm sure with practice I could have got used to it and better/faster, the confidence and predictability of the car with the ABS turned on allowed me to focus on other aspects of my driving and be quicker.

Just as my fellow Nova Scotian Red said.

CDN EM1's came with standard with ABS.

There is two things that are different been a US and CDN EM1

Standard ABS and Heated Side Mirrors.

I have heard that the US didn't get Vogue Silver Metallic for a color choice either can anyone comfirm that?

My EM1 is VSM

well damn, the US gets shorted again...

and you're right, the US EM1s came in either Milano Red, Flamenco Black Pearl or Electron Blue pearl, no Silver. (don't like silver on cars anyway, so no big loss there for me)

but damn I want heated mirrors and ABS.

The ABS would probably be a little more difficult.

The Heated side mirror button is right above the control square for the power mirrors.

I wonder how difficult it would be to add that feature to your car?

If you could get some CDN SiR Side Mirrors and the button and Wiring for the dash. You would have to wire them into the door and place the switch. Could probably be done.

Anything can be done if you want it bad enough I guess.

I'm willing to pay someone to find a wrecked SiR and rip off all the ABS and heated mirror equipment needed to reinstall it on my car. Seriously, I am. I could use both of them with these crappy Indiana winters.

I was told at one point that 15% of SI's came with ABS.......that was probably the 15% of production that went to Canada.

I checked my Handy Helms Manual

It actually contains wiring diagrams for the heated mirrors

It calls them Mirror Defoggers.

Should check that out.
