Default o2 sensor/boggin question?

Well, my car had been lackin performance and hesitating which i attributed to spark. Got new cap and rotor, and gonna get wires. Problem went away. I had also found that my o2 sensor wires were kinda frayed so i fixed that and it helped the problem a little. Well there nite I changed my thermostat, and i guess at some point i managed to cuase the wire on the o2 sensor to break off where the 2 connectors meet. Easy fix, i can go to the junkyard and steal....err...hem...buy, new connectors. Well for a temp fix i just twisted em together and electrical taped it. When i go to drive the car, it hesitates and studders horribly. I disconnect it it runs realy nicely, but after a while i get a cel. Are there any adverse effects to drivin with this thing not functioning? Cus i'd really hate to f' up my cat or cause any other problems till i can get this fixxed. Thanks.

You will run rich when you don't have it functioning correctly, any damage that can occur is variable on how long you drive with it non-functioning.
