synchromesh, regular for friction modified
regular or friction modifried
Wow!! I must have read all the tread about gm synchromesh and I'm still confused about which one is better. Most of treads are saying either;
-regular is better than friction modified;
-friction modified is better than regular;
-regular is just like honda mtf;
so can someone who has experience please clear this up for me. I will most likely go with fm to hid my 2nd gear grind.
thanks

gm syncromesh is garbage IMO... i used it, and i had better luck with honda mtf... i will never put anything else in... i say get the mtf and put in some lucas tranny fluid with it... helped fix the tranny if my winter beater 89 ef.
I tried to get FM but none of the GM dealers around even had a part number, so I just got the regular. Got rid of my 3rd gear grind though. I have never tried Honda MTF, so I can't compare.
I was about to go buy some friction modified today but decided on the regular(pennzoil 4.99).
It is much easier to go into first from a roll now, before I had to be at a complete stop. It got rid of my 2nd gear grind at low rpm (3.5k) but still grinds at 8k shift. After 1000 miles if it still grinds at 8k I'll try out some friction modified. Overall regular synchromesh is much better than honda mtf (IMO). Had honda mtf in my tranny for about 350 miles.
While doing research on sychromesh I read somewhere that you can buy just the friction modifier by itself and add it to the regular. If anyone knows about this please let me know.

all of these "grinds" are coming from all of u trashing the gears... i will never ever ever ever trash a gear, even when i am at the track... our honda trannies werent made for it. if u RESPECT your tranny, than honda mtf is the absolute best for it, afterall, that is what was intended for every honda...
get the friction modified if you are going to get gm syncromesh! I hope you know it is just a band-aide for fixing your syncro problem, it will most likely come back, but it will help for the time being! For grinding problems don't forget to check your motor mounts. I changed my mounts and my grinding stoped, just something to consider. I think motul is the best however for transmission fluid, not mtf.
regualar SM, i didnt have a grind or anything but it smoothed things up alot, goin straight from a Honda MTF fluid change too...i heard once no to use the FM cause it breaks down the seals quicker or some ****...

I have grinding issues when going to 3rd gear around 4500 rpm. I have 48,000 miles and haven't had any issues so far. I also haven't changed my transmission fluid once.
I have never taken my car to the track and respect my tranny and I am the only owner. I mean I have driven it hard sometimes but rarely.
Also, for regular or friction modified.. does it matter about the temperature outside?
