I just spend a good 30 min reading through old threads about it and think I've made up my mind. I was scared to try it a while back and wanted to wait to see if anybody's tranny has fallen apart or gotten worse over time with this as apposed to Honda MTF .

I don't want to go spend $40 on GM SMFM if I should just stick to $10 worth of MTF.

Inputs are appreciated.

been using GM Synchromesh for probably close to 2 yrs now, no problems. I always used the NON Modified but then switched to Friction Modified for my last flush, dont notice any differences. but 3rd gear grind has been gone since I started using the GM, and the MTF and Redline did not help with my 3rd gear grind I used to have.

Which one do you use exactly, since for the various posts I have read there seems to be various GM Synchromesh however not all are created equal.

there are 2 types, regular synchromesh and friction modified synchromesh. right now im using a mix of both, kind of like 2:1 ratio of regular to friction modified.

and I know what chris F is leading up to, but I dont have much evidence either way to tell whether it holds up under track conditions. street-wise it works great. Ill use it until it fails.

i dont have an R...but im using GM synchromesh friction modified in my civic...a month after i bought the car i did a fluid change...no problems yet

So far in my B18C, I've used it for at least 3 months. No problems at all.

many S2K owners use GM synchromesh friction and have no problems. a few of these owners track their cars regularly (myself included) and it hold up fine. i change all my fluids at least once a yr regardless of mileage though

i have used gm syncromesh and it has been good to me. i do flush the tranny fluid roughly every 20k however. also, do not use the regular gm syncromesh as it is basically the same as honda mtf. the friction modified is the stuff to use.

i have been using it for about 6 thousand miles and love it! cleared a 5 grand grind out of 3rd gear... gonna flush it again before expo though

why would it have bad results regardless of the length of use? it helps if anything, correct?

well, regular on time changes should keep it all good. you got a point though, laziness will result in damage,

Does anyone have a GM Part number on the Friction Modified....

search around they are around here somewhere. the regular synchromesh comes in a round container, the friction modified comes in a square container similar to a quart of motor oil. any GM stealership parts dept should have it sitting on the shelf.

fyi...Penzoil Synchromesh is the same as the non-FM GM Synchromesh and is available at Autozone for $5 a quart, which I believe is considerably cheaper than the GM versions.

i change my Honda MTF every other oil change and no problems yet...
i only do about 4 track days a month so figure about once a month. Oil always comes out gold and magnetic drain plug is reasonbly clean.
However my tranny has had a third gear grind at high rpms since i got the car three years ago.. ive put off a rebuild that long and still going strong.

lucky for me .. i don't have any 3rd gear problem... everything is OEM.
