I have water in the spare tire "well" of EK hatch. Lot'sa rain here in the Washington D.C. area today. I got like 1" in the trunk

Do I have a bad rain guard/seal on the hatch or is it coming in thru the taillights? Hep!

I have the same problem in my EJ8. I blame it on a bad seal, possibly a rear-end accident before I owned the car that the trunk is not aligned properly. Either way I end up with smelly carpet that I have to wash in the washing machine otherwise it will mold. I've thought about fixing it, but how often does it rain in Las Vegas

 

To test for the water leak location, put a dark colored (preferably an old) towel under each tail light. Rinse the back end of you car off. If the water shows up on a towel it will turn the towell a darker color. That way you can narrow it down between the tail lights.

Repeat the same process with your hatch seal.

I narrowed the leaks in my Del Sol down to the C-pillar covers (leak #1), antenna location (leak #2), and my drivers-side tail light (leak #3) using that technique.

Use silicone to repair/fix the leak and you should be set.

 

Check to see of you have water that builds up in your taillights. If there is water in them, they are prolly overflowing and going thru a bad gasket and down into your spare area.

 

It's the rubber seal around the back of the tail lights. My quick and cheap fix was to take both tail lights out, take off the rubber seals flip them over and swap each one to the other tail light. I did that 2 months ago and haven't seen water in my spare tire well ever since. Plus I'm in Seattle and it rains like crazy here.

In response to seeing that FAQ thread:

You don't need to drill a hole in your car to drain the water in the spare tire well. Just use a wet/dry vaccum to get the water out. His solution for sealing up the area is good. Silicone takes about 3 minutes though.

get new tail light gaskets and u should be fiine

 

i opened my trunk yesterday to find about 3" of water.

i just got out the drill and had some fun. don't forget to use some silicone around the bare metal though.

 

drill a hole in there, that way you have no stale water. that is what i did, and i haven't had water build up in months.

 

Or you could just remove the black plug instead of drilling. Not sure if coupes have this but I know hatches do.
