Hi all,

I have a 2000 Civic DX and I got a "tune up" which consisted of a distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs.

After this, my engine has been running rough at idle. The whole engine compartment shakes & you can feel it in the drivers seat.

3 different shops have all looked at it, plugged their computers into it, said no problems and civics just run rough.

Bull!

Any ideas on how I can fix the problem myself, or what I can tell a mechanic to check out?

The last shop that checked it out said that the distributor cap/rotor weren't Honda OEM... so the last thing I can do is return them to spec.

how does the car drive?

 

The car seems to drive fine. Once you apply any sort of gas while the car is not moving the engine shaking stops.

The Honda service center tested the Idle Control Valve, and that seemed to be working.

I would double check the spark plugs and wires, I thought my clutch was going out (well it probly is), but my real problem was somewhere in my plugs and wires. I think one of them, had a small crack in it or something...

 

is the car idling normal or is it idling low?..if its low it could be the IAVC ... i would also check and make sure your plugs/wires are tight and i dont think ur timing would be off since you said the car is running fine.. let us know if u figure it out

 

It doesn't have a Tachometer, but I took the car to a Honda dealership and they adjusted the idle into the "normal" range and it still has the problem.

What is a IAVC? Too many acronyms around here!

I took off the distributor cap, and the new rotor that was put on can be wiggled back and forth... is that normal?

After putting it all back together, the car ran super smooth for about 5 minutes, then started the shaking stuff again.

Ah, well then the idle control valve was tested by a Honda Service Center and they found it to be working fine.

 

make sure your plug wieres are seated at the cap and at the plugs!!!

 

I've bought a Honda OEM distributor cap & rotor, we'll see if that fixes it.

 

After putting on the new distributor cap, gasket, and rotor that are Honda OEM, the amount of vibration has dropped considerably.

I'll probably buy some Honda wires as well to go completely back to spec.
