Default Timing mark on Crank sprocket?

So, I did a water pump job on my 95 civic dx (d15) this past week, and when I went to put the timing belt back on, I saw a little black dot on the actual sprocket of the crankshaft. Is that the dot that you're supposed to line up with the arrow? I couldn't figure out how you would do it with the pulley, so i assume the tiny black dot on the sprocket was what i should use to set it before i put the timing belt on. Is this correct?

To the right of where the "key" enters into the pulley there's a groove/knotch on it. There's a pointer above it from the oil pump. Line these 2 up and you're good to go.

Well, I aligned this tiny black dot on the crankshaft sprocket with the arrow on the timing cover. I turned it over. It didn't fire, but i don't think i heard any valves hit piston. Do you think i'm safe?

So the notch is on the sprocket, not the pulley. Right?

Should I worry that i bent any valves, or would that be loud?

Manually turn the crank. If you feel anything bind or hit, re-do the timing.

All you need to do make sure you are on TDC at the cylinder head and at TDC for the crank. After that, it all slips on.

If you set the #1 piston and the crank to TDC, you'll be fine.

There is also a mark on the pulley itself that points upward at the lower cover's mark.

This is what you need to know:

*I know Macro settings own me*

You should be able to do it with these 3 pics.

Then take it ALL apart again, make sure everything is lined up with the pics I gave you above, and then turn it over.

Make sure the timing belt doesn't skip a tooth. Make sure everything is torqued down.

Your engine will run like *** and you will hear very nasty anging noises from the engine.

IMO, take it apart before you are sorry. If you don't have confidence you did it right, do it again. 1 hour wasted is better than paying for a new cylinder head.

Well, I had already tried to start it using the black dot for the timing mark. I tried to start it and I guess since the timing was sooo offer, it didn't even fire. I didn't hear anything. I'm just wondering if it had hit valves if I would have heard them hit or not.

So now I just can't get the timing mark right, because when I do the method of turning the crank and watching the belt teeth move 3 over, then tightening the tensioner, it just throws the marks out of sinc because of the slack that was in the belt that I took out. How the hell am I supposed to prevent that from happening?

Should I just give up now and assume that I bent valves when i tried to start it before, when i was using the black dot on the crank sprocket to line up the timing?

EDIT: I was told by a few people that this is a non interference motor. So no matter what, I can't touch the valve to the piston surface? I was unaware.
