ran into a problem today (timing belt tensioner/alternator/dizzy)
well this morning on my way into work, as i'm driving, in the snow ect.... i notice my car is idleing very low and has a lack of pre 2000rpm power.
first thoughts are snowpacked wheelwells, or bad alternator, get to work pop the hood 10.9v at batt
check fluids there all fine..... hmmm ok....
come back out later and see if situation has changed as temp warmed up outside... nothing actually got worse... lack of low end power and some sputter and missfire.
still no check engine light. odd i think, but this time when i started it it sounded like something plastic was being rubbed or ground up against... wtf....
track down sound. seems to be comming from alt/ crank pulley area..... here's what i found..
alternator seemed fine. solid mounting. and belt tension is still good. but if i push on the lower cover where the timing tensioner is... it makes a sound like a dying cow or dog...
i think my tensioner pulley might be going out... anyone else had this problem? it's the one thing i never replaced when i put my b16 in over 2 years ago, ran perfect w/ no probs till now.... figures the one thing i didn't do broke.... i'm gonna take it apart tomarrow and take some pics to show u guys... too dark to wet to cold out...
anyone else have a similler problem? it's funny because it wasn't doing this untill today, and last night right before i brought it home i was cruising in low gear at 4k and i heard this horrible deep toned static noise from the same area of my engine compartment.... thought nothing of it. but wasn't gonna post untill this happened... wish i could tell you all more... if you want to know what the specs of my car is u can see on my webpage...
but for now
91 civic si
non obd b16a (maintained better than cher at the plastic surgens)
pw0 virgin ecu.
new everything but tensioner lol

ha ok that was fun, so yea i guess we're both ownd... so yea.. back onto the topic. i'm gonna take it apart tomarrow guess it's suppose to be nice according to you.
the reason i think it's the tensioner is exactly as stated...
-started it
-made horrible beltish noise, pop hood look, seems like comming from alt/crank area
-observe closer. no probs w/ alt or belt
-closer still
-press on lower cover slightest bit (right where tensioner is)
-get's LOUDER!
-engine runs like timing is off
-lack of power especially up hill, poppy and boggy through power band... vtec hits no chk engine light, very little power prior to 2000rpms almost not enough to make it up a slight incline from stop... slight meaning from like 20deg tops

IT seems like if it was a tensiorner issue, you'd be having problems higher in the power band during vtec, not at lower rpms.

bump for my pics, and thanks i think i've pretty much nailed it maybe someone will actually look at this thread now
first 2 u can see belt wear. last u can see where maybe belt is not on right contact path of tensioner.

btw this timing belt has less than 30,000 miles on it

The tensioner is not even in the pick, that is the water pump.

Is 10.9v with the car running, if so you have a bad alternator or wire some where.
Also press down with your thumb between the cam gears, apply some pressure and take a pic.

took a pic. that's def the water pump my bad.... stoner moment. come to find out that that's a cam gear bolt from my skunk2 cam gears....
i think it was slowing the whole drivetrain down making a low voltage situation. causing that horrible noise.... they've been on the car for over a year and a half now... DAMN U SKUNK2~~!!!

luckely i have a extra t belt.... pump should be ok... i'm gonna recheck the tightness on all the camgear bolts, put the new belt on and be happy again hopefully.
i know my car and i know when it's not running right, come a long way from n8 and that minime aye gator

well every intake camgear adjustment allen bolt w/ lockwasher was loose.... wtf! they came loose after 2 years! shibby.... tightened them back up nice nice... ohh btw the reason it was running like a bag of poo was due to the intake cam being retarded as far as it could go.
