Cracking Open Tranny...what to look for - Bad bearings/Synchros/Seals?
Well the 90si tranny i'm using in my build is giving me a few drips a day from i'm guessing the input shaft? I KNOW it's not the main seal on engine but when i pull dust cover there is some oil building up on bottom of trans case.
ANYWAY, i'm buying another Si tranny and before i put her in I want to crack the case and check everything out...what/how do i look for worn synchros, what do they look like
. Bearings/seals to look out for? I have a helms and have rebuilt my y8 to 12:1 compression will all new seals/bearings to spec...i'm not new to engines. BUT, hehe i've never worked on a tranny!
I've searched and found a few helpful threads but nothing on what to look for visually on synchros and stuff...most people know the trans from driving it and then replace.
I'll prob end up buying a rebuild kit online or at NAPA or something and doing it in my garage per what i find once i crack case open.
P.S. any good threads people have marked for EF D16 tranny rebuild? I've got an EK civic helms...
Thanks!
Vince

Just look for uneven markings on all your helical gears, synchros worn down to hardly a sharp point(a good syncro can almost cut your finger) burnt components by burnt that means blue colored metaled objects(that would be very bad) to much play on your input and output shaft bearings.
blue colored bearings......is bad as well. if everythign seems tight and looks bronzed/metalic like in color you should be fine. take note of what the fluid looks like too coming out of it....that will tell you right away what kinda shape the tranny is in.

check all seals, use feeler gauges to check all gaps, check synchros, clutch teeth, noise from bearings, end play.....the helms should cover everything. if your tranny is leaking from the quill/input shaft area....i'd recommend you to take a look at the clutch disc for contamination as well while your at it.
yeah for sure the clutch disk...so far no slipping, just hope it'll stay clean untill i get new tranny in.
