Metal filing sludge in tranny case from the bearings
Hello all,
I obtained a 5-speed S40 CX tranny a while back and cracked it open. Everything looks good except for the bearings. The previous owner told me that he heard a grinding noise, so he replaced the whole transmission. I figured that it was one of the bearings, and that is definitely so. All over the inside, there are deposits of this filing goo, in nooks deposited by oil flow, and around the bearings. When I took the casing off, some of the bearings even fell apart and were thoroughly pitted.
Has anyone ever seen this filing gunk? It is very sticky and has a putty consistency. It looks like stop leak. The gears don't look worn. Is this something to be concerned about if I am replacing all of the bearings, seals, and synchros anyway?
Thanks!

Re: Metal filing sludge in tranny case from the bearings (parasonic)
Anyone? I was buried on the third page in about 38 seconds.
This forum is way too bustlin' for its own good these days.

It shouldn't be a problem as long as you clean the case really well of all the contaminate. I would replace all the bearings that includes the roller bearings under the gears on the input and second shaft. If you are going to rebuild it you might as well spec everything and replace any worn out parts good luck
