Default how often do you guys change your fluids?

the reason i ask is that i am taking a long trip to northern california from san diego and i wanted to make sure everything is running smoothly.

all the fluids have not been changed since i bought the car at 79,000 miles and now it has 104,000.

sorry about that ...ive changed my oil every 2K ...and i recently changed my transmission oil with synchromesh... I juss wanted to ask yo uguys if it would be necessary to change everything else for this long of a trip...

Sorry for the confusion i should have been more informative..

Any info would be great..

thanks guys

I change my trany fluid twice a year; coolant every year; oil every 3k miles or before and right after each track day; brake fluid once a year.

Dude, if you're in SD, I'll help you change all your fluids.

Tranny fluid gets changed about every 4 oil changes with me, and I change my oil in the Prelude every 3k miles.

Never changed coolant or brake fluid, though.

I think (well at least I hope) he means other than oil b/c if he hasn't changed his oil in 27 thousand miles his car would not be around. I change the coolant every year and tranny fluid twice a year.

c'mon guys the 3000 mile myth ought to be busted in this forum by now.

5000 for dino, 7500 at least for synthetic.

pissing money away, hurting the environment, and possible hurting your car. if the neptunespacebears guys can get 18,000 miles out of 1 change of mobil 1...

I googled it.

Seems like Mobil 1 can go to 8000 miles or so before it starts to fade away, and at 12000 miles the filters need to be replaced.

The only thing that is different for me, in my case, is track use; their cars are mostly commuters/long distance everyday cars - I didn't read any reports/samples from track driven cars; might make a difference, might not.

yeah, i shorten up the interval when i've been on track. I've been on an 8000 mile interval for normal driving, and count track days as 1000 miles so, i'll change accordingly.

Though i'm wondering if i should go with a thicker viscosity oil for track days, just for insurance purposes.

I recently switched to Neo Synth. I just changed it about 400 miles ago. Probably gonna change it soon as it cleans out all the sludge and **** out of the motor. Then put in another 5 qrts and it will be so fookin clean its not even funny. Its supposed to last around 10K miles.

Do you mean you count each day at the track as the equivelant of 1000 street miles? So a weekend at the track would equal to 2000 street miles ? That seems reasonable to me.

I've been considering moving to 10-40, in general, as 10-30 seems to get "digested" quickly.

yeah that's pretty much the system i have in place. I think the other guys change their oil in dedicated race cars after 2 or 3 track weekends? at least that's my understanding.

my oil consumption isn't too out of hand just yet, though i did switch from royal purple 5-30 to mobil 1 10-30 recently. I usually overfill the crankcase a little at the track to help with oil starve, by the time i'm leaving there's the right amount of oil left...i'm wondering if thicker oil will put more meaningful stress on the engine when i overfill.

what tranny fluid are you using? i'm on a mix of synchromesh and honda MTF, but i know both aren't ideal for tracking conditions. I was thinking Mobil 1 synthetic/Redline mixed with honda MTF for my next tranny fluid change...

Noted.

I guess it would depend if the change from 30W to 40W is really a substantial step up, mechanically - I don't think so.

I'm probably a minority, but I've been using Honda MTF, religiously, since day 1.
Others don't have quite the luck with it, but for me its been fine.
