I was wondering, on a long term basis and with a stock cluch, if I shift real hard ( releasing the clutch fast), will it wear faster or is it better to slip it more. I have a 97 civic hatch and when I shift into 2nd gear, the only way to stop the jerkiness is with a bit of gas. At first I thought it wasen't good but now Im feeling like It should be the right way to shift.

 

Since no one "taught" me how to drive stick, I am wondering the same.

 

The way I figure (just my thinking) is that slipping the clutch actually wears it more as there is more time of engagement than with quickly releasing the clutch. But it shouldn't really matter with the stock clutch as long as you don't ride it for long periods of time. The stock clutches are durable for the long term (my 1993 CX still has the stock clutch and I've owned it for two and a half years now) But when releasing the clutch hard, the tranny, engine, and mounts all have stress exerted upon them.

Choice is your own as to how you shift.
