Default tranny to block bolt hole stripped

ok the other day i noticed that one of the large 17mm bolts that hold the tranny to the block was loose. i tried to tighten it up and it went in but wont get tight. it gets to sitting flush with the tranny and then just spins. i at first thought that the bolt had broken off in the block but i removed the bolt and its intact. it seems to partially grab the threads with no real torque on it but it wont hold the torque at all. i can see parts of the blocks threads on the bolts threads. im sure its stripped out. has anyone had this happen? i know its not a HUGE deal since it has plenty of other support, but id rather not leave it like that. what should i do to fix this? drill out the block and retap for a larger bolt? is there anything i could do to the block to restore the threads of the same size? any help is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't reccomend JB Weld on this one . If it was my car, I would retap it

try to you some catalyst penetrating lub and then use a vise grip.. try this back and forth.. also i would also try to tap on it lightly... then if all else fails just buy that bolt grip set... im pretty sure there are kit that includes 17mm bolt grip...

The easiest way would be to drill and tap it...then get a larger bolt from Home Depot or soemthing. Good luck

huh? the bolt isnt stuck in there man, the bolt comes out fine, the threads are just fuckes and the bolt wont tighten.

everyone else thanks for the replies. that sleeve thing looks like a good solution but i wouldnt know where to get it and im sure its expensive. im trying to go a cheaper way.

i had the same problem,i noticed i had a huge gab between my tranny and block,i tried to tighten it down and it wasnt working so i pulled the bolt out and my treads were on the bolt,i ended up using a slightly short bolt and i put the threads that were on the other bolt onto the new to make a little snugger fit and put a lot of jb weld on it,its been 3 or 4 monthsand i havent had a problem. at the time i was grinding gears real bad,i didnt have time to tap it so its was a quick fix that has not let me down yet.
