Default Aftermarket timing belt

Is it worth it to buy an aftermarket timing belt? Like greddy or POWER? I have an ls/vtec and im going to swap out my ls water pump for a gsr or type r water pump. What timing belt should I get if I get eithier a gsr or type r water pump? I called my local race shop and they said that none of the companies make a timing belt for ls/vtec and he said to stick with OEM and I told him that whats the difference if OEM will have the same teeth number as the aftermarket one and he said he don't know. Is it true that I can't use an aftermarket timing belt with a ls/vtec? I plan on buying a timing belt made for the water pump i'm buying. Let me know what u guys think.

even with crower stage 3 camshafts? because right now my belt is wobbling and hitting the timing belt cover. Mechanic said the belt is stretched out.

just dont let the belt come off or break or your f*cked cause tegs are 0 interference engines.... in other words say good bye valves and pistons.

not if its seated properly in the teeth in the gears and tensioned correctly. they say to change them 60-90k but mine has lasted 112k and i took it off the other day and all the teeth were fine, it was just a bit brittle.

I used the Goodyear Gatorback timing belt...I got it from Autozone I think...but may have been Pepboys. It wasn't too much, and I'm sure it will hold any reasonable amount of Torque. I wouldn't pay extra for some "tuner" belt that is probably made by the same company as normal ones.

As far as this is concerned, I broke my belt on my LS, and it didn't damage anything. Was cruising at about 70 MPH on the highway. As far as a VTEC head is concerned, I think if your not in VTEC you'll be OK, but if you pop while in VTEC you'll hit valves.

Using a different water pump shouldn't make any difference, the gear on the outside should be the same. I don't even know if theres a difference on the inside

I think on the LS/VTEC combos, theres like a 1 or 2mm difference (can't remember if short or tall), do some searching as see whats up. I think poeple use a GSR timing belt though.

But yes it all comes down to getting that belt on there correctly. You'll always have a little bit of play on the long stretch, but thats OK.

So what could of made my belt stretch? I was thinking that maybe the camshafts were to aggressive for the belt. What do you think? Right now when the motor is idling and when I rev it, the belt hits the timing belt cover, is that normal? I searched and I read that if u use an non vtec timing belt use a non vtec water pump and if u use a vtec timing belt use vtec water pump.

Just time. Mine popped at like 110K miles. It started making a weird noise at cruising speed on the highway (were the engine spent alot of its time), and then one day it just broke.

Oh ya, if this is your first timing belt change, be prepared to get pissed off alot....its the one thing I hated doing on mine...its not hard, its just stuff slips here and there, or get just a hair off, and you have to start over again.

The single best piece of advise is getting some nails or screwdrivers that fit perfectly in the holes on the camshafts, that way they stay locked in place....otherwise they like to pop out of place alot.

The Prostreet kit is an OEM kit.

My Prostreet kit is still chilling in my trunk. Gotta do it one of these days.

So you don't think it was because my camshafts? It's normal for a belt to hit the timing belt cover?

The vtec water pump has 22 teeth and the LS has 19 teeth. That is why you must get the vtec belt for vtec pump and vice versa, so there is a difference. The 1 or 2 mm difference doesn't matter because that is fixed in the tensioner. I just finished my LS vtec swap. I used the LS belt because i still have the LS water pump. It also fits perfectly.
