Default Mounting a digi cam inside your car.

I believe I am not the only one who has done this but I found that the headrest of the Si seat is a good place to mount my digi cam (Sony Cybershot P-52).

The reason I brought this topic up is because my temporary set up seemed to hold in the camera good (I have to wedge the camera case between the camera and headrest) but there seems to be a lot of vibration sounds on the camera. (I think the zippers in the headrests vibrate on the housing of the camera) Btw, I think there is excessive vibration sounds due to the poly motormounts.

I am trying to find a good place to mount the cam without the use of an in-car-camera-mount.

Any ideas?

Strap it to your face? Maybe try this in the welding and fabrication forum. I'm sure those innovators could weld up some kind of tripod to bolt over the passenger seat. - Darrell

I know someone who bought one of those rear-upper chassis bars (the kind that are supposed to reinforce the hatch area, this was on a DC teg). And then used the I/O Port style camera mount and mounted to that since he didn't have a roll bar/cage to mount it on. You could even try doing this to a rear strut bar (might be too wide a view tho). Since neither one is as big an O.D. as roll cage tubing, you fill up the space with some padding and it ends up damping vibrations pretty good. Of course this route costs money...

If your looking for the no/low cost solution, people have been DIY-ing headrest mounts. Make a bar that either gets fastened (a couple of holes for the headrest bars, u-clamps, etc.) to one or both seat headrests. Then mount the camera on the bar. You can get the camera mount part from a camera supply store (the part with the screw in the base to thread into the camera) or just find a screw with the right threading and some washers. I've seen people use wood, aluminum, etc. for the mounting bar. DIY versions of this:

Yeah, Si seats don't really have adjustable headrests, but you should be able to squeeze that or something that thick in. Actually that's only $45 (http://www.chasecam.com/cruisecam/index.html), might be easier and quicker than doing the work yourself.

I've even seen people at open track days use a full on tripod with a bunch of ratcheting straps/bungees/etc. to cinch it down.

uh... why exactly are you wanting to put a CAMERA in your car? how are you going to snap a picture? 10 second delay? and what exactly would you like in the picture frame anyway. why not just hard mount it on the dash...

Doh! I forgot Cybershot is primarily a digital still... probably has a limited MPEG feature.

Thanks for the replies. I'll post my 1st in-car vid that i made... i just wanted to see if i could do it so that i can film my first track day in the summer.

I guess I could make a mount like that... Looks pretty simple. I'll make it out of 6061 Aluminum on the Haas CNC machine. (Maybe if I make it good enough, I can sell them too! )

Ok, here's my ghetto / nasty / useless / can't-see-**** Vid.

I took it at 1am.
Small streets.

You may have to adjust the contrast (in Windows Media Player)... cuz you can't see ****. We'll you can't see **** anyways because it is a very low bit card... and it's pixelated. No windows are open... lots of vibration sounds.

I'm not even going to post this in the Vid's Thread cuz it's not worthy... and you'll see why LOL.

Hope it works.

I don't know if the suction cup would give a good view though (from the passenger window)... sounds like a decent idea however.

I'll try to take more vids with different mounting places and objects.
