Default Good Turbo Mufflers (Quiet)

My friend just bought a GSR from this kid that riced it out.. it has a shitty straight muffler on it that sounds horrible...

No question he's going turbo in about 4 weeks, but just can't stand loud exhuast...

What's his best options for mufflers - when he gets a new one should he get new exhuast? (upgrade to 3'')? or is that going ot make it really loud?

thanks

he should think about upgrading to a 3 inch (kteller, thermal, etc), it will help his spool in the long run...

Personally I use a 2.5" exhaust with a Flowmaster and a cat. But most of the turboheads here will tell you to go with a Magnaflow and a glasspack. It depends on how much noise you are willing to endure for an increase in spool speed. (I actually WANT a slower spool because my suspension cannot handle that much power off the line)

I think if there was a spectrum of spool speed vs noise, 10 being willing to put up with the most noise for spool speed and 1 being willing to endure very little noise for spool speed - we want like a 3.

any suggestions based on that?

Well, let me just say that my setup is nice and quiet with a low rumble.

I have the Greddy evo. I cannot hear my car at WOT, just my compressor and air going woooooosh. Maybe a little brrrrrrrrrrrr *** i rev up. Super duper quiet.

When driving next to people, i can get on the throttle and not have them notice untill my BOV goo sqquuuuuueeeek. lol

Car is low enough to set off car alarms, while its very hard to hear. Kind of weird when your music is on 10% volume and you hear car alarms chirping... yet cannot hear your car.

I dont know about spool though, about 500rpm slower than open dp. I get full boost around 4000. I also have a tiny tdo5. Very queit man, i cant say that enough.

It totally rivels stock. WAY WAY quieter tahn my AEM CAI + greddy evo exhaust, and definitly queter than the stock airbox + greddy evo.

2 resonators to a 3" ES oval. It's a bit louder than stock, but it really isn't bad at all. I can hold a conversation in the car perfectly fine, I don't get a headache driving on the highway, and it makes great power.

My exhaust used to be 'headache' loud before I went turbo... and with no changes besides the addition of the turbocharger, it's quiet enough that you can hold conversations and normal talking level at pretty much all times (unless the wastegate is open....)

My advice is don't spend any more money and wait to hear how it sounds after the turbo. Chances are it will be pretty quiet.

My magnaflow muffler and resonator are pretty quiet. The loudest part of my car now is the wastegate dump

I just bought the longest Magnaflow straight through muffler I could, I think it was like 21 inches long, it was really quiet, and Im sure it flowed well.

Ok so I'm in the same boat going 3" exhaust and wanting it to be very quiet. I hate having really loud annoying exhausts. However I still want good flow. I'm planning on tying my dump tube back into the down pipe a few feet down to keep noise down. I'm also planning on running a resonnator or two. Right now I have a hyper medallion from Tanabe and it's been quitet but that's been with a 2.5" cat and a whole different setup. Anyone have experience with the tanabe with a 3" and resonnator? What resonators are you guys using?

i had a Apex N1 on my car when it was n/a and it was loud as hell...most of the time you will notice that when you go turbo your car the turbo in ur engine is going to be alot louder then your exhaust. atlest from what i noticed from the the videos of my car you can barely hear my N1 all you hear is turbo. and remeber everybody has a different perception of what a "loud" exhaust is.

power or quiet pick one.

if its quiet it wont flow enough. turbos are usually fairly quiet anyways. 3" is a good size IMO.
