97 EX brakes
My girlfriend has a 97 ex coupe. We have been having problems w/ the front brakes for a while now. The problem is that any time pressure is applied to the brakes @ speed (over 45) there is a pulsating that shakes the entire car. I replaced the pads a while ago without replacing the rotors (due to the hassle involved, and the fact that she told me they had been replaced not long ago). The vibrations subsided for a while, but it is now back worse than ever. I had been advised on this site that there is sometimes a problem with the caliper seizing up, and since the rotors could also be the culprit, I want to replace everything. The rotor over hub conversion has been an appealing option for it's obvious future maintenance benefits, and this is the route I think I should go. I have searched, and have seen the writeup on the accordinglydone site. This brings me to my question. I need a comprehensive list of what is needed to perform this swap on this model/year car. I want to replace the rotors, pads, hubs, bearings, and calipers. This is my girl's car so no need for a performance upgrade just reliable stopping power with ease of maintenance. Any info/advise will be greatly appreciated....Again I have searched, so please refrain from the "do a search" responses. Thanks
if it is an ex shouldn't u have 4 wheel rotors and disc just like my 95 ex v6? i have solutions for ur problem. i had the same sympton u just describe about ur car, except the shaking on the steering wheel would be worse as speed increases. my problem was exactly the rotors, in fact as soon as i put in the crossed drilled powerslot rotors on all 4 wheels, my car started to shake immediately but i waited six months later b/c i was working 7 days this past summer and didn't have anytime to fix the problem. it was warped from the beginning and these were brand spanking new, possibly a manufacturing defect. so i replaced the rotors with brembo blanks and hawk hps pads and now no surprise no more steering wheel tremblings. as for ur wheel bearings, it might not need to be replaced b/c as long as the springs are still attached it should work just fine, it has no performace effect at all. i highly suggest u do the legend caliper swap since u stated that there's a chance ur caliper might have seized up on u, go to napa and order a 94 legend gs 4 door front calipers, it will swap right in without needing anything extra and the brackets comes with the calipers so u don't have to buy them separately as stated in the direction of accordinglydone website. if u get all of the about done, expect to pay just under 1 grand with labor and parts
Yes, the car does have 4 wheel discs, and by the way it's a 4cyl. The back brakes are fine, so no need to replace them. The vibration occurs only when slowing from speeds of 45 or more. It doesn't increase with speed. The conversion I was referring to, was the disc over hub conversion. Which allows the ability to remove the rotors without removing the entire hub assembly from the car. Hence the ease of maintenance mentioned above. The reason I thought it would benefit to replace the bearings now is because I don't see the sense in getting the old ones pressed out of the old accord hubs and repressed into the new cl hubs.
u mentioned u wanted to replace ur caliper cuz u thought it seized up on u, if ur gonna do that go with the legend calipers b/c it has 2 pistons as oppose to ur 1 piston stock calipers, the price shouldn't be that much of a difference, i got mines from napa for $240-refund for ur old core calipers= $140 final price without labor. u'll find a slight improvement in stopping distance with new rotors and pads.
