Default tranny problems: B16 cable/hydro/quaife, etc.

symptoms:

*i was driving.. and hear a "hum", like something vibrating.. from the passenger side of the car while accelerating or otherwise putting load on tranny.
* noticed it was more loud when decelerating.
* noticed it was LESS loud while coasting, out of gear.
* sound got worse under load
* deceleration got WAY worse.
* i could now hear acceleration/decceleration over my stero
* noticed when i came to a light i would hear the noise.. then, the slower i went it would go something like: "clickclickclickclick click click.. click... click....... click....... click................click.......................c lick............... come to a stop"
* finally got SO bad that the car was jerking and wouldn't move. had to be towed home. when i push the car i can hear it again, " click click click"
it clicked all the time, doesn't matter if it's in gear anymore.

thoughts i've collected:

- differential: i can turn one wheel while the other stays still. i'm told, depending on how my diff is shimmed, that may be possible. it may be set up loose enough to run that way.
- clutch: thought maybe a pressure plate bolt backed out, seeing how that's happened to Q recently... but no.. doesn't sound like a clutch problem
- flywheel: flywheel bolt backing out? nah.. doubt that.
- axle: supposedly, this axle was a good one. but i could be wrong. if i broke it, that would 'splain a LOT.

so this is where i am. gonna pull it apart later today and see what's up. anyone?

none of the above, your mainshaft berrings are bad. you'll need to change the bearings, and the noise will go away.

that would cause the tranny to lock up and make that "clunk"ing sound?

also, when i turn the axle and hear the "clunk" i can see the axle moving where it goes into the tranny ( passenger side ).

i acually just read the top portion of your post , that's why i said it was the bearings in the tranny. my bad, but that clicking noise id coming from your axle. good luck!

axle seems fine. it articulates in all directions..

i did notice that when i move the axle, it seems the insides of the tranny are moving. there is a bit of play.

with the tranny out, i turned the axle and could hear the clunking noise from INSIDE the case that is not a good thing. i just PRAY it's not the quaife

well with a stock diff, if you hear cluncking noises the diff is shot. i never heard of a busted quaife, but i guess you'll have to open the tranny to find out!

same here. i can't imagine the quife is jacked (thanks GOD). i have a feeling it's broken teeth on the gearset.. but with trannies.. it could be ANYTHING.

My car has a quaife diff and clunks when corning on the gas, even just a little bit of gas, straight its fine, left and right fine out of gear or with the clutch on is fine and even clutch off in gear at idle rpm, but on the gas and turning it sounds like its going to blow apart, reverse is even fine on or off the gas, i already changed my motor mounts and axels, anyone know if this is the quaife diff?

Quaife's have a lifetime warranty. But it takes a lot of abuse to damage one. Mine has seen plenty 750hp passes with no problems.

Sounds more axle related. Unless the diff was shimed wrong and blew the bearings out.
