Does VTEC slow you down?
I have been wondering this for the longest time. If you took two exact identical cars with 2 different motors and transmissions. Take a B16 EG hatch stock. The 170 Hp version and take a D series motor build it and make it put out 170 hp and same amount of torque. I understand this is almost impossible because when you mod a car some parts will boost torque. But which car would really win? Would the B16 win because of it's closer geared tranny and thats all? Sorry if this has been posted before but I searched nothing came up.
The motors are such an apple and orange comparison, I couldn't even begin to predict without seeing the dyno printouts on those specific motors and the gearing on the trannies. But, assuming they both have identical hp and t curves, the car with the closer ratio'd tranny would run quicker but not faster in the quarter. This also assumes both cars weigh and are driven the same.
In a nutshell, this is because proper gearing takes advantage of the available torque. The motor with the broader torque curve will generally perform better as well. This is where the VTEC really shines.
