Default Transmission innards

Hey hey, kids, it's been a long time since I've been here. A time full of bullshit and more bullshit...that's what happens when you abandon h-t. And speaking of bullshit, not a week after I started trying to sell my 93 prelude si, the cv joint goes out...fix that and a week later, my tranny dies on me (and on a funny side note, as I started taking out my transmission, I notitec my other cv joint boot is shredded and grease has coated my wheel well...I'm starting to hate this car...)

anyways, here's a question for you guys. The problem in my transmission is that something along the line is preventing the axles from spinning. The car still shifts fine and the spedometer goes through the motions with no grinds and no problems. So if I had to guess, my differential or the shaft adjacent and connected to the differential(forgot the name and my I don't have my helms handy, sorry) has broken. Which one of these is more likely?

It all happened when I was going up one steep **** of a hill and shifted from 2nd to 3rd at about 5000rpm. In the middle of the shift I heard and distinctly felt a snap and poof, no more shifting, just a joyous coast backwards down a big ******* hill to the nearest sidestreet. Like I said, the spedometer is still working, so the probem has to be after the vss, but I don't know nearly enough about the inner-transmission to know for sure (i'll find out soon, I suppose, when I tear that mother open). Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated, and for god's sake someone keep it from snowing tomorrow

Well the VSS is just a sensor that sits on top of the tranny housing, so it's not like it does much in the tranny.

Honestly, I know jack about trannies. If one breaks, I'll just replace it.

How does it act when you try to go from a stop? Does it make any noises, grind, etc?

well on the other side of the VSS plug is a little gear that connects to another larger gear on the differential which spins the little gear and tells u how fast ur going.

With this, u can be sure that the differential is in place, but the inner gears of the differential might be broken which is highly unlikely. I would try to change both ur axles, because if one of them brakes and there is no resistence on the differential then non of the axles will turn. The torn CV joint that u mensioned might actually be broken inside the boot. Check that out first because its pretty damn hard to brake something in the tranny well at least from ur situation.

99% sure its ur other axle.

good luck, and let us know what happened

Point A: You are the man. If you lived anywhere near me I would buy you a drink. You saved me hours of work and hundreds of dollars.

Point B: As I was taking out my axle on the passenger side, the one that plugs directly into the differential, I noticed it didn't need prying out. Also, barely any tranny fluid came out when I drained the transmission. Didn't think much on that at the time, but after reading your post and thinking hard on the matter, I figured my axle popped out while driving...so after reinstalling enough on my car to get it to run and to test the freshly reinstalled axle, I find that IT WORKS! YAYAYAYAYAY!!!!

thank you again, and have a on me. I owe you one.
