Default transmission plug question

on the top of the tranny right below where the starter goes in there is a plug that uses a 17mm socket to take out, was wondering what this is for and can I fill the tranny thru this whole?

That's the tranny fill hole. On a level surface, fill the tranny until fluid comes out of the hole. Reinstall the bolt along with a new washer. You're done

It's possible. These are crush washers. A little trick is to flip it around. I haven't had one leak yet.

Are you referring to a manual tranny?

The only spring I can see is behind the detent plug on the bottom side.

eda6 is referring to the plug / bolt on towards the top of the passenger side on the side of the transaxle case (as opposed to the top looking down). There is a similar bolt lower down that is the drain plug. No springs on either of those.

I started filling my other tranny from there and after 2 quarts it started coming out thru the axle holes, so it must go in the diff and stuff.

There's no reason not to fill through that 17mm headed bolt hole, other than you have to take out the starter. If its coming out the axle holes, you obviously don't have the axles in. You won't get enough oil in the tranny to have the right level unless the axles are in.

The correct level is right at the center of the diff.

was testing on another tranny to see if it can go there. because the fill plug in mine is striped fully, and axles are in, it is easy to move starter thats what i'll do

If there is oil coming out at the axles, there is a problem. The fill level is above the axles. It takes a preety good whack to get the axle clip to clip correctly.

Also, you will have a problem with how much to fill. The correct procedure is to fill until the oil is level with the filler hole.

Have you tried the stripped bolt remover tools. I picked up a set from Sears, had a motor mount bolt that was rounded, had already broke a socket. Hooked up the special socket, breaker bar, and off it came. It was a 17mm as well., and pretty well completely rounded off.

If tranny fluid comes out the axles it sounds like you need to replace your axle seals.
