Retarding is toward the firewall...advancing is towards the radiator

I am tuning it up adjusting vavles, checking timing, and changing oil, plugs, wires, rotor. Having some problems and I want to start from scratch and check to make sure everything is still good (i.e. timing, plug gap, ect.)
and my valves need adjusted.
