Spark Plug and Wires Post
I am wondering what a good spark plug to run in a gsr is? I have heard not to use platinum, i have heard to use platinum, what are you guys running in your gsr's, or any b series. Also, what is a good wire, i like the spoon high tension, but i dont know if i see the point, should i just get a set of ngk's, i just need to know the best spark plug and wires to use, all motor by the way, with spoon cams, and just a bunch of aftermarket goodies. thanks
There's already been a ton of information given on these topics so if you do a search you'll get all kinds of info.
In an effort to help you though, Ive seen independant dyno testing done on different makes of plug wires on a B series engine and the ones that made the most power were the MSD's followed by the NGK's. Either of these wires would be more than adequate for you.
Don't use platinum but run either an NGK or Denso plug and you will be fine. There is no real significant difference between the sparkplugs from either of these manufacturers power/performance wise....just cost. I've used the Denso Iridiums which were nice but performed no better than the NGK Iridiums I currently run now. The main difference is the cost with the NGK's being far less. Just stick with these makes, there is no "best" plug...just good quality ones to choose from at different prices.

well, i just went and bought ngk non-iridium plugs, willl these be ok as well, also, which wires are you running, the ngk's, or the ngk power wires, there is two different ones. thanks
Irridium plugs are considered to be a step above platinum plugs in general for lifespan and more powerful/less resistance to spark. They can tolerate boosted or nitrous applications where as platinum cannot.
To the original poster, don't worry about not getting Irridium plugs, the regular NGK plugs are excellent for you car too.

If you're going all motor then you don't really need anything special. I like Accel plugwires with NGK laser-platinum plugs. That combo has lasted me a long time.
If you check your plugs alot, I recommend using silicon grease to avoid stressing the wires while trying to remove the boot. (Put a dab inside the connector for each boot)
My old NGK wires are currently on a Del Sol with 70,000 miles on them.
Stay away from magnecor and jacobs plug wires, they're poorly made.
When shopping remember that ignition components don't make horsepower, and you shouldn't pay more than $100 for a set of plugs and some wires.

Let's all have a poll or somethin? Or do we have one?....

NGK is reccomended. NGK is the best. some say don't run platinum with Nitrous Oxide. Get high performance ones, Iridium from NGK. Youll be safe, there the best for your motor (all honda motors, and safe cause they'll take turbos and nitro). Not too expensive, like 20$ for 4.

if your running just a N/A GSR, or any honda motor for that matter, unless your pushin over 10lbs of boost, stock wires are fine. Compared to other car makers, honda's spark wires are fantastic. Stick with stock, your NOT gonna notice anymore power by upgrading wires. plugs will do far more.

Stock Honda wires are good but there are better performing wires out there that will give you more hp over the stock set such as MSD, NGK, Moroso, and ACCEL. The gains aren't huge but every little bit helps when it comes to a Honda. MSD showed a gain of 4hp over stock, NGK gained 2.7hp, Moroso gained 1.5hp, Accel gained 1.8hp and Magnecore gained .8hp over stock. The only wires the stock Honda wires outperformed were the Vitek wires by 1.3hp.
When dynoing plugs, it was nearly impossible to see any difference between the power outputs of the different plugs. The only time a difference clearly showed up was when an older carboned up or oil soaked plug was replaced with a fresh plug. You'll get more of a performance gain from a spark plug just by experimenting with different plug gaps than you will by changing brands.

seriously show me your little dyno graphs to prove this, and i dont mean graphs like this one

Btw the car being dynoed is a 91 honda civic EF with a b16 swap and DRAG turbo system.

this is what i just put in my car about two weeks ago. Since I put them on everything has been smooth as can be.
i got my from import rp in the classified section for a pretty good deal.

lol..no you didn't just get put in your place, what you said was pretty accurate actually, I just showed the exact gains so people would realize that they weren't huge or anything, but that there was a difference.

Thanks for posting the link for me. Yes the B16 is turboed but it's running less than 10 psi of boost, looks to be about only 5 or 6 psi. The main point is that it clearly shows a difference between the wires and stock ones which is accurate. Independant dyno testing I did myself at my own shop showed similar results on my car. The spark plug testing I talked about was totally done at my shop but on various Hondas/Acuras including my own car.
