Default Honda Civic 92 - Air Condition problem

Air Condition does not work well.
Gas is full, and pressure OK.
Air Condition stops cooling spontaneously
Especially in hot days.
Normally, Air Condition works well for 5-10 minutes then it stops (air
getting warmer to regular room temp).
Any Ideas?

If not, please elaborate, recharge excatly what.
Thank you in advance.

sears and other automotive places sell AC recharge kits they are normally anywhere from 25 - 50 bucs.

you need R134a refrigerant(sp?) i think if its completely empty you need 1 1/4 bottles but you might be ok with just the 1 that comes with the kit.

it takes about 30 min to do and its easy and has step by step instructions

if that does not work then its possible you have a leak in your system and you will more than likely have to sweat or take it to a shop to get looked at. normally about 200 bucs to have it recharged or fixed at a shop depending on the price of the hose that is leaking

Thank for the reply.
However, Gas is full, and pressure OK.
No leakage...
Any other idea.
As I said, I works well but cuts off spontaneously.

92 is R-12 unless its retorfited
sounds like it might be overcharged
does it ever come back on after it shuts off?
if i was u i would take it to a place bc it sounds like u dont know much about AC and there is a lot of stuff u have to do and have all the tools to do it

Normally, it does not come back. It works for a few minutes at the beggining
of the trip.
Then, it does not work. It will normally not start again.

I think it does not work when temperture is rising:
It works normally in the parking lot under shelter, and it does not work
when it is hot during the ride. Maybe there is no connection to
the temperture, I just do not know.

Any Ideas?

Just go to a shop that does R12 refills and have them check for leaks. If you get it refilled it's going to cost about $150.00 I think. Thats what I just paid a few days ago. My car is a 93 and I refilled it two years ago and it lost its coldness. I went back and the guy said as long as your car blows cold air for over a year, it's ok. There are small leaks on all cars he said. I think he's referring to the older model cars.

But according to someone here at Honda-Tech your car is NEVER supposed to lose coldness and if it does it means there is a leak somewhere and you can't refill it due to the laws. You'd have to check and find out what is leaking and have that repaired. Or so someone here at Honda-Tech says. I'll believe my mechanic.

If your car is low on refrigerant ,YOU HAVE A LEAK. A properly functioning A/C system should be maintenance free.
How do you know your system is full of refrigerant? Did you have the system checked for leaks or did you just fill it up w/ a kit?

Is your A/C compressor staying engaged? There are alot of things that could be wrong and it would be best if you had someone look at it who knows A/C systems well. If you re-charge it w/ a kit, you are just putting a bandaid on it and it will leak out again.Get it fixed right and be done with it
The symptoms your describing sounds like youre low on charge.

I know that the A/C is not on low refrigerant.
A mechanic have ready checked that.
Any other ideas that might explain the cut offs.
Interesting enough, today was a bit cold. And the A/C
worked continuously. Might this explain what is going on? Other ideas?

I know the AC system must have a certain about of pressure in the system in order for the compressor to kick on. Otherwise it stays off. But from what you are saying it it cuts on and off or works for the first few minutes and quits. When it quits as in being cold, is the compressor on or off? Is your car running hot? Fan not engaging at the right temp? bad switches?

It works for the first few minutes and quits (rarely it may start again).
When the A/C stops, the air fan is still working - the problem is that
the air is warm , not cold (the air is in room temp, not heated).

I believe that when A/C stops cooling the air, there is no change in the engine RPM... Well, what do you think about this.

OK, I will take it to the shop. It is still interesting the reason for the above symptoms.
