If I put the y8 head on my y7 block and use the stock y7 ecu and don't wire-up vtec, will it cause any problems?

 

You will need to use the Y7 t/b with the built-in IACV. Just move the Y8 t/b spring/rotor onto your Y7 t/b.

Other than that it won't harm the engine not to activate VTEC but it seems pointless, you will probably be even slower than a Y7 without the VTEC coming on.

Why not get everything in order to complete the job and have it work properly?

 

Low on funds, but could I use that setup and a v-tec controller, would that work? I don't want to have to buy a 5-spd intake manifold with tb because i already have the auto manifold. Witha vtec controller would i still have to wire up vtec to the ecu?

No, if you use a separate controller for the VTEC you can just run it to the solenoid and there you go. The Y7 ecu has the same redline as the Y8 so no worries about that either.

I had planned to do that you are doing also but now I'm converting to OBD1 with P28. I just got myself a 2-wire IACV and tapped the manifold for it. It already has the flat spot machined on the back of the auto manifold and one of the mount holes is there to help you line it up...

I already have the ecu, but I don't want to have to go out and get a knock sensor and a 5-spd intake manifold with throttle body so I was thinking about just getting a vafc.

 

Yeah a knock sensor will hit you for a good $50, an IACV about $25-$25 then you need to get the plugs for them do the wiring. Like I said though, you can drill & tap your auto manifold for the manual IACV. You can keep the auto Y8 t/b and block off the hole for the built-in 3-wire iacv.

However, a VAFC is pretty costly so I don't know how you'd be saving money getting one of those, and the wiring is more difficult then modding for a Y8 ecu...You might find a Fields VTEC controller for around $100-$120 though.

 

How would i block off the one on the throttle body?

Take if off, use the base to trace on a piece of steel or aluminum, cut it out and drill mount holes in it. Might have to spread some blue RTV on it to seal it up when you put it on.
