Default Replacing CV Boot

How do I change out the outer CV boot? Do I have to disassemble the inner to get to the outer?

I should say the same to you.

You do have to disassemble the entire CV joint. There's a series of parts you need to remove, such as clips and spiders, to re-install the boot. Then, you need to pack the boot with a specific amount of grease.

My CV joint boot is tore. IMO, get a new axle. Get an AutoZone unit with the lifetime warranty. $75 and free axles there after.

Well.... gawww damn
I only bought the outer boot kit. From what yall are saying, I would need the inner boot kit as well too, correct?

I just recently bought this slug(car) and it has 111,7xx miles on it. You think I should just go ahead and replace the whole damn axle?

Isn't there like a faster way to change the outer boot without having to pull out the axle and messing with the inner boot? Can't I like rip the outer boot off and disassemble the outer cv joint, put in new boot and reinstall in reverse?

the outter cv joint is fix, but the inner you can take it apart. the only way for you to replace the outter is to remove the inner. you will need a special pair of plier for the band. depend on what band you got too. it's not that hard, but it's a mess .

So I will need an inner boot kit right? The bands I got for the outer ones aren't the same as each other... How the hell I work them?

the 1 band you can use a pair of die/cutter.
the 2 band you will need that special plier! unless you take the band back and exchange for the same 1 band. cause i had been there.

Okay, I know how that crimping tool works.... http://www.vfaq.com/mods/CVboots.html
Dunno about the other band I have.

This doesn't look right to me...

If I were to crimp that, I would still have slack left right?

You don't need to touch the inner joint when doing the outer boot.

Here's what you do-

cut off the old boot
hammer the outer joint off of the shaft (over the circlip that you can't see), just hammer it off the splines.

Once the entire joint comes off....clean all of the grease up, and slide the new boot onto the shaft. Reassemble the outer joint back onto the shaft- you may need to use a pocket scredriver to hold the circlip while tapping the joint back over it. You will know when it's seated.

Then, band up the small end of the boot, dump your grease into the boot, and attach the bigger band, and you're set

for the other band you will need a tool that have a hole so you can thread the band in and beginning to twist with a socket or handle.

If you are careful in disassembly you do not need the inner boot assembly - Although - when I did it in the past I replaced the inner assembly, and when I do it again in a couple of weeks (after Thanksgiving) I will again. Seeing that I have to take it off any way, I will put all new boots and grease and band clamps on the whole half shaft.

How do you do this procedure - sorry if this seems rough - buy a helms http://www.helminc.com

Or, post your email and I can send you the pages you will need form MY helms -

You can also use speedy boots from JC whitney - you may also need band clamps.

to you man.
As I'm reading down this topic, I'm thinking, "Someone better mention you can hammer off that outer joint."
You dont need to touch the inner joint.

why spend 50 bucks minimum for an axle, when a boot kit costs 10 bucks and takes maybe 10 minutes more....
