Can the radiator coollant be flushed by DIY
yes it is just get a big drain pan and open the (petcock) on the bottom of the radiator and the coolant will drain out if you cant find the petcock just pull the lower radiator hose although this way is messy. then just run clean hose water through the filler cap untill the fluid comes out clear at the bottom shut off water allow it all to drain. close the petcock and fill with antifreeze-water mix watch the level through the filler hole as bubbles of air with work there way to the top. when it looks about full start your car and let it warm up leave the filler cap off so air can escape also turn the heat on so air is flushed from the whole system. after letting your car run like this for about five minutes top off the fluid and your done.
You can also install a flush kit... at Autozone or the like, it's basically a T fitting that installs in the heater return hose. You drain the coolant, cut the heater return hose, and install the fitting, which has a connector for the garden hose.
Then you can run the car with the hose on and the rad cap off, and the coolant will come out of the radiator cap. That's a backflush.

That works but fair warning, those plastic tees suck. They have left many stranded on the side of the road with a heater hose split in two.

you'd have to be stupid to run daily with that T in there,

you'd be suprised how many people drive around with what amounts to little more than a cheap plastic tee capped off with the equivilent of a two liter soda bottle cap holding their coolant in.

I do that! Word. No seriously, my cooling system has some problems with rust or something. I flush it every month almost. So until I get that straight, I will continue to run with the T. I do have an extra hose in my trunk, and a gallon of coolant.
