Default B16 Tranny on B18a question

ok, so i hear that a b16 tranny on a LS will give you better acceleration due to the shorter gears and that makes semi-sense to me. i might just be a total retard, but im just wondering if this makes any sense to anyone else. A b16 revs to 8.2k to redline, a b18a revs roughly 6.7k to redline, with that said, now im not sure, but i think a b16 tranny would top out around 30mph in first at 8.2k, around 60mpu in second at another 8.2k, 75-80 in third, etc. this is where im a little confused...if you put the b16 in an LS and rev'd it to its redline in first wouldnt you only go to about 20mph or less, since you arnt going to the 8.2k stock redline. then 40-45 mph in second and so on....so with that in mind...you would be cruisin 65mpu on the highway doing about 5,000 revs?? can anyone out there with a b16 tranny in a b18a or b help me out with this. i dont know much about transmissions, but this makes sense to me, maybe im way off. please help.

yeah thats right but i dont know about the 20mph shorter per gear diffrence, the shorter gears would keep you in your power band longer w/out shifting below you horsepower band

Your'e somewhat right. A b16 tranny will give you a little better acceleration on a b18, however you will pull more R.P.M's at a little slower speeds. There are a lot of people here who love theirs, as I did mine before I went F/I. I have a 01 LS. There are advantages and disadvantages to going to a b16 tranny. Advantage= improved accel through all gears. Disadvantage= higher RPM's at cruising speed, not quite as good on gas due to more RPM's at cruising speeds also. You also have to be kinda careful about snatching gears as the tourque from the b18 can be hard on a b16 tranny. I think mine ran about 45K or so {RPM} at about 70-75 MPH. However, most people just take their final gear from the b18 and use it in the b16 transmission so they can keep the cruising RPM's lower. It's all in what you want man. Faster acceleration----use the b16 tranny or use a GSR tranny{my personal prefference} Take the time to search and get more opinions and view on the subject. And to aswer your question......your right. B16 on B18 will increase your RPM'S.....but not enough to hurt anything. You will just have to shift a little faster>

Thanx for the props---just my 2 cents worth
Really, all your doing is dropping your gear ratio Mr. Chow which increases accel.

how hard is a cable to hydro conversion? I heard first gen b16 trannies are kinda weak. thats kinda bizzare that someone would say that the LS torque is hard on the b16 tranny considering some people runn 250-400hp turbo. does anyone know the strengths and weaknesses of the b16 tranny.

To be honest, i'm not sure if it's all torque....but more general driving habits. Lets face it, these trannys don't come from the factory built for use in a 400hp vehicle. I'm just saying from my experience that the syncros {ect} can be a little weak under extreme driving habits in ANY trans. Thats why most people that build a 400 hp car, take the time to strengthen their tranny if they really want something that will last. I am by no means the "final word" in transmissions and/or discussion about trannys.......thats why I suggested you do a search for more opinions.

a s4c tranny will spin at 3.8k- 4k at 70mph depending on what size tires you are using. but regardless, the tack and speedo will read 70mph between 3.8 and 3.9k

its a great mod to do. and i just happen to have a very nice s4c b16 tranny with a kaaz lsd for sale. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1058617 [/ shameless plug]
