Default need new xm deck, what works?

My deck/stereo got jacked a couple days ago. I need to get a new deck that is xm ready. I was interested in teh alpine 9827 i saw at circuit city, but then realized thats what my gf has (not using it currently).
She got me the xm commander for our anniversary...but i guess thats not directly compatible wtih anything? So any new deck i buy that is xm ready is still gonna need a $50-80 kit/modulator to hook it up directly?

What do u think about the 9827? Any comparable decks that are better? Any other way i can hook up my xm rather than spending another $80?

i just got done researching how to hook up a skyfi to a head unit so it should be similar. first of all it doesnt matter if your head is xm ready or not, since you are going to use the commander (i think it kinda the same thing?) so you have 3 options
1. fm wireless modulator
2. fm hard wire modulator
3. p-bus connector
im going with the bus connector, i was told it will have better sound quality

hope this helps

Is the 9827 the one with the built in XM tuner? You could always purchase an XM Direct unit and hook it up to your Alpine. Though that option will set you back about $100.00 which you were trying to avoid.

That's really the only way to do it unless you already have a Skyfi or Roady and do what Coot_er said.

No. The XM Commander has a wired fm modulator. It plugs inline with your antenna. So it will work with any radio.

Yes. The Commander only works with the fm mod. For the general public, the FM mod sounds great in a car with stock audio equipment. However, with an aftermarket deck and or speakers, I can tell the difference between direct connect (bus) and FM mod.

Usually, when you get a deck that's XM ready, you need to buy that company's tuner. However, Terk makes a universal XM tuner. You buy the tuner and antenna pack for $50, and then you get the appropriate interface adapter for your deck. Currently, they make kits for Pioneer and Sony and Kenwood, which used to be Sirius only. The adapters are like $45. Used to be at least $250 for tuner and antenna, IF you could find the tuner.

So sell the Commander to a buddy with a stock stereo, and buy the tuner for the new deck you're gonna buy and run it direct.

the CDA9820XM has built in XM.

The XM commander (XMRVRFM001) has the ability to do a full line output via rca. the fm modulator is included in the box if you need it. But if you are looking into an alpine head you don't need to worry about it.

if you use any of the CDA decks, you can use the KCA121B that has an ai-net plug on one end, and female jacks on the other for an aux input. you can connect it to the xm commander and stick the display somewhere. you'll obviously need to use the controller to dial in the channel, but you'll at least you won't be hearing it through the fm tuner.

If you are using an M-bus deck, you can use KCM123B for the aux inout.

woohoo, thast the joint right there.

So i get that cable and the CDA9827. I then feed the signal to the deck digitally and get cd quality sound, but still have to use the external tuner.

I guess thats close enough for now, until the tuner comes out from alpine.

you will not get a digital connection from the xm commander to the deck (it's analog) but you'll get the full 20Hz to 20kHz bandwidth capability instead of the more limited and compressed sounding 40Hz to 16kHz or so.

the alpine xm tuner is not coming out. the only tuner they had was the tuat020xm. the 021xm was never released. Terk (?) has a solution for xm now, where there's a universal box xmd1000 and the deck specific docking module for alpine, sony and pioneer. they go for 50 bucks a piece. you'll also need an antenna. you can see it on http://www.terk.com

for less money and better sound quality, directed a.k.a dei just released a sirius box to plug into xm ready decks. it has a msrp of $80 and includes the antenna.
