Default cylinder sleeves for a D16Y8

Hey guys,
I confess I'm a little lost on the topic of cylinder sleeves for my civic.
When are they neccesary?
What exactly are they?
I've heards several different things about them ranging from inserts to full on replacement cylinders that yoy drop in.
If any one can lend some advice or links I'd appreciate it

Theres 2 types of Cylinder sleeves.

1 is the replacement inserts, which are used on stock rebuilds. Common for your basic every day use engine.

the other type is what is usually talked about in racing which is the Iron ductile Thick sleeves. These are not inserts for the stock cylinders. The process cuts the actual stock cylinders about half way and the Iron Ductile Sleeves are pressed in to fit.

I have posted comparison pics several times, let me look for the pictures I posted up to show the difference of a stock vs SLeeved block.
